EXT. SIOUX CITY STREET – NIGHT
A street magician is performing to a small crowd of people. He has what looks like a balloon in the shape of a heart on a tray. He throws the tray up a little and the heart balloon turns into a dove. The crowd ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ and clap as the dove rests on the magicians fingers. Shot scans up to a street sign that has two signs hanging off it that read: IOWA Celebrates Magic Week. Welcome.
INT. BAR – NIGHT
A random magician is playing with cards. Camera pans to behind him where JAY is performing a card trick for the young female bartender.
JAY
Shirley A-Cut
BARTENDER
(impressed)
Wow; you’re really good.
Shot to another magician, VANCE and his female ASSISTANTsitting nearby watching perform his trick.
VANCE
(sarcastically)
Yeah, great! Hey, show us another.
ASSISTANT
Finish your drink, Vance.
JAY
This is a simple Riffle Shuffle.
He tries to fan the cards together but the spill over the table. VANCE can be heard laughing loudly.
BARTENDER
Do a card trick for me.
VANCE
(sarcastically)
Ooh; here we go. Incredible Jay.
His ASSISTANT looks very unimpressed at his childish behaviour. JAY and the BARTENDER are obviously just ignoring him.
JAY
Alright, young lady. Would you please tell me when to stop?
He flips through the deck of cards stacked in his hand.
BARTENDER
Stop!
JAY
Ah-huh. This is your card.
He holds up the card for her to see. It’s the 3 of spades.
JAY
Commit it to memory.
The BARTENDER nods eagerly as JAY puts her card back in the deck.
VANCE
(sarcastically)
That’s incredible Jay!
ASSISTANT
Don’t be a jerk.
JAY fans the cards out in a line on the bar so the back of them is facing down, then he flips them over so they roll like dominoes and their faces are visible.
JAY
Now, do you see your card?
BARTENDER
(looking at the cards)
Um...no, I don’t.
JAY
No, the cards say ‘No’.
JAY makes the cards move back and forth as through they’re shaking their head ‘no’. The BARTENDER laughs.
VANCE
(stage whisper)
Check his pocket!
ASSISTANT
For God’s sake, Vance.
VANCE
Just check-check the damn pocket!
VANCE gets drunkenly to his feet and stumbles over to JAY. JAY and the BARTENDER still ignore him.
JAY
So, if you then remove-
VANCE clears his throat loudly and leans against the bar next to JAY. He puts his hand into JAY’s breast pocket and pulls out the 3 of spades.
VANCE
(to BARTENDER)
This your card?
JAY snatches the card out of VANCE’s hand.
BARTENDER
Why are you so mean? Can’t you just leave the old guy alone?
JAY looks embarrassed to be called old. The BARTENDER is obviously sorry that she said that.
INT. THEATRE – NIGHT
Scan shot of the predominantly vacant seats in front of the stage to the stage itself where, JEB DEXTER, a Criss Angel look alike, is being lowered onto a platform. There is loud speed metal music playing. On the platform is a picture of Earth. JEB has his arms out at his sides and as he’s set on the stage he brings them around to his front and we see there are small balls of fire in each of his palms.
Shot to one of the few people in the crowd, an older man named CHARLIE, who doesn’t look impressed with the act. We should note that he has a vertical scar over his right eye.
CHARLIE
Is he wearing eye-liner?
Shot to the man sitting in front of CHARLIE, we see its JAY.
JEB
(over the scene)
Wait, wait.
Shot to behind him, another man named VERNON , is sitting also watching unimpressed. Clearly these three men are not fans of JEB.
VERNON
Can’t tell; I’m blinded by all the sterling silver.
JEB
The light has to find me.
Someone shuts off the speed metal music.
JEB
Get it? It has to find me!
Two male stagehands arrive on stage.
STAGEHAND
Let’s take it back.
CHARLIE
What a-
CHARLIE and VERNON
Douchebag.
JAY
Will you guys give it a rest? You’re giving me a headache.
VERNON
Oh, come on Jay, his mystery act is shaking his ass that an Eighth Avenue hooker.
CHARLIE
It used to be about skill.
JAY
Yeah, used to be, used to be, listen to the two of you. It’s pathetic. Bitter old men talking about the glory days. You know what, this-this douchebag isn’t the joke. We are.
CHARLIE
Hey, who’re you callin’ a joke?
JAY
Me, for one.
They look back at JEB as the music starts up again. JEB now has two silver rings linked together.
JAY
That used to be us. Maybe he is a douchebag but he’s playing the main stage and we can’t even afford an assistant.
JEB unlinks the rings by simply pulling them.
JAY
(fed up)
What the hell are we doing?
CHARLIE
We’re doing alright.
JAY
No we’re not. We’re sad. We’re old.
VERNON smirks and shakes his head.
JAY
And we’re dying.
CHARLIE
Jay.
JAY
I’m gonna do the Table of Death tonight.
VERNON and CHARLIE obviously do not think this is a good idea.
VERNON
No, no you’re not, Jay, don’t be crazy.
CHARLIE
You almost killed yourself the last time you tried it and that was thirty years ago.
JAY
Ah, who cares if it kills me? At least I’ll go out with a headline.
INT. THEATRE – NIGHT
We see a bored looking man yawning alone at a table. Scan shot to the stage where JAY is performing his act in front of a table with a curtain open in front of it. We see the room isn’t packed with people; but there are a few couples sitting around.
JAY
(very seriously)
Ladies and Gentlemen, what you are about to see is not a trick or an illusion. Simply a display of daring and dexterity.
JAY turns around and lies down on the table. CHARLIE appears and started strapping him into the iron shackles on the table.
JAY
Now, young lady, if you’ll please check the bindings, you’ll see they’re very real. Very tight.
A young woman dressed in black comes out from behind the curtain and starts to check the shackles. They appear to be tightly in place.
JAY
Thank you. You may take your seat.
The woman leaves.
CHARLIE
(speaking quietly so the crowd can’t hear)
Damn straight they’re tight...you sure you can slip ‘em?
JAY just smiles and lies his head down. He looks to the roof. We see that there are a dozen or so sharp spikes up above him ready to drop and thus stab right through JAY’s body. CHARLIE shuts the curtain as the lights on the stage are turned off. We see VERNON off stage watched. He does the Sign of the Cross over his body. CHARLIE gets a hand-held blow torch and as he moves over to the side of the table JAY is strapped to, shares a worried look with VERNON. CHARLIE goes to a rope that is holding the spikes up in the air and proceeds to turn on the blow torch and light a piece of string that is connected to the rope. Once the string burns through; it’s obvious that the flame will burn through the rope and the spikes will fall.
EXT. OUTSIDE PATRICIA HOTEL - NIGHT
We see VANCE, still very drunk; stumble out onto the path still wearing his magician’s cape and top hat. His ASSISTANT comes up and stands by him. She’s still annoyed.
ASSISTANT
Show’s in an hour, Vance. Try to be on time.
VANCE waves a drunken hand dismissively at her.
INT. THEATRE – NIGHT
We see the string is still burning and, though the curtains are closed, we see JAY’s silhouette as he struggles to get free of the shackles that bind him. CHARLIE watches on, obviously worried his friend won’t make it out in time.
EXT. OUTSIDE PATRICIA HOTEL - NIGHT
VANCE is still stumbling along by himself. He waves to some people who walk past him.
INT. THEATRE – NIGHT
We see the string is almost burnt to the rope that holds up the spike and JAY is still struggling. VERNON looks very nervous. Suddenly the string burns through with a large spark and burns through the rope. The spikes are released and the crowd gasp in horror as they stab through JAY’s silhouette. We see underneath the table that the spikes have gone straight through.
EXT. OUTSIDE PATRICIA HOTEL - NIGHT
VANCE stops suddenly and clutches his heart; as though he’s having a heart attack. Then he crumples to the ground.
INT. THEATRE – NIGHT
CHARLIE pulls back the curtain and JAY is standing there completely unscathed. The crowd cheer wildly. CHARLIE and JAY share a nervous look; we get the sense they are very uncomfortable at these turns of events.
EXT. OUTSIDE PATRICIA HOTEL - NIGHT
A birds-eye shot of VANCE dead on his back shows that he has bleeding wounds on his body; stab wounds. As though he was stabbed with the spikes in the theatre even though he was nowhere near them at the time.
END TEASER
EXT. SIOUX CITY STREET – DAY
JEB is performing a flamboyant card trick on the street in front of a group of, predominantly female, people.
JEB
This isn’t a trick, ok? I don’t do tricks. This is a demonstration about demons and angels.
We see SAM and DEAN come over to the crowd wearing suits. DEAN already looks sceptical.
JEB
Love and lust.
DEAN
What a douchebag.
We see there is a camera guy and microphone operator filming JEB perform his trick.
JEB
All that stuff mixed up in my head.
SAM
That’s Jeb Dexter.
DEAN
I don’t even wanna know how you know that.
SAM
He’s famous...kinda.
DEAN
For what? Douchebaggery?
JEB
(in background)
But whatever happens...no matter how messed up it gets. Don’t touch me, ok?
We see the mostly female crowd are still watching very intently.
JEB
For your own safety.
JEB takes a deep breath and shakes his head. Then all of a sudden, he seems to be possessed. He starts shaking and crying out. DEAN and SAM look on with highly amused smirks. JEB throws his cards at the window of the shop next to him.
JEB
GO BACK TO HELL, DEMON!
One card, the ace of diamonds is stuck to the window. JEB runs his hand over the card but only touches glass. As though somehow the card has magically gone inside the window pane.
JEB
Is this your card?
The crowd cheer and clap enthusiastically.
DEAN
You’ve gotta be kiddin’ me, a fake demon possession?
DEAN walks away from the crowd looking annoyed. SAM follows him.
DEAN
I can’t believe people actually fall for that crap.
SAM
It’s not all crap.
DEAN
What part of that was not a steaming pile of BS?
SAM
Ok, that was crap but that’s not all magicians. It takes skill.
DEAN
(amused)
Oh, right, right, I forgot, you were actually into this stuff, weren’t you? You had like a deck of cards and a wand?
SAM
Dude, I was thirteen. It was a phase.
DEAN
Just bugs me. Actually, it offends me. Y’know, playing into demons and magic, when the real thing’ll kill you bloody?
SAM
Like a guy who drops dead of ten stab wounds without a tear in his shirt?
DEAN
That’s what I’m talking about.
INT. VANCE’S MOTEL ROOM – DAY
VANCE’s ASSISTANT is packing up his supplies. DEAN and SAM are there interviewing her.
DEAN
Does your boss have any, ah, enemies that you know of?
ASSISTANT
Vance had plenty of enemies.
The ASSISTANT grabs a handkerchief from a bag and proceeds to pull it out. It’s one of those seemingly never-ending handkerchief ropes.
SAM
How so?
ASSISTANT
He would steal from other musicians. All the time.
DEAN watches, slightly intrigued, as the ASSISTANT continues to pull on the handkerchief rope.
SAM
What would he steal?
ASSISTANT
Stage effects, close-up techniques, anything he could get his hands on.
DEAN
Is that enough to get him killed?
ASSISTANT
(scoffs)
These guys take this stuff pretty seriously.
The ASSISTANT lifts up a coat on the bed and we see there’s a white bunny underneath it. SAM makes an ‘of course’ face.
ASSISTANT
There you are.
She picks up the bunny and pats it.
DEAN
Did you find anything weird in Vance’s stuff? Well, weirder.
ASSISTANT
Matter of fact I did.
She puts the bunny in a leather bag and picks up a tarot card from inside Vance’s cape. She holds it up so the face of it is facing SAM and DEAN. The picture on it is of a man who has ten or so swords stabbing his body; a similar death to Vance’s.
SAM
I’m guessing this didn’t belong to Vance.
ASSISTANT
(shakes head)
He hated card tricks.
She hands the card to SAM.
ASSISTANT
He never wanted them around. Let alone in his precious cape.
SAM looks over the card. Both brothers take on this information.
INT. JAY’S MOTEL ROOM – DAY
We see someone’s hands as they perform a card trick. There’s a loud knock at the door and we see that it was JAY performing the trick. He smiles as goes to answer the door; expecting to know his visitor. He opens the door and CHARLIE comes in.
CHARLIE
Are you gonna tell me how you did it?
JAY
Did what?
CHARLIE
You know what.
JAY
The great ones never give away the How.
CHARLIE
(angry)
Yesterday you were sad, old and dying.
JAY smiles.
CHARLIE
Today you’re one of the great ones? Come on, this is me you’re talking to.
JAY
You didn’t think I could do it.
JAY, still smiling, smacks his friend playfully in the chest and walks across the room.
CHARLIE
No, Jay, I didn’t. You’re my friend. My best friend. I-I just didn’t wanna see you get hurt. That’s all.
JAY fans out his cards on a table.
JAY
Charlie. You wanna see something? Look at this.
CHARLIE watches JAY with his cards. JAY splits the deck into four piles then piles them in between each other back into a full deck. He splits them again then lays out three cards, all aces, from the centre of the deck.
CHARLIE
(impressed)
Not bad.
JAY
Not bad? I’ve been working to pull an ace outta the middle of the deck for years. Just one. Now I can pull three.
CHARLIE walks away.
CHARLIE
Still missing the ace of hearts.
JAY
I wanna do the Executioner tonight.
CHARLIE looks horrified.
CHARLIE
Are you trying to get yourself killed?
JAY
It’s just a rope slip.
CHARLIE
Houdini wouldn’t try the Executioner.
JAY
Exactly. Think about it, Charlie, if I can pull this off...
CHARLIE
I think you’re pushing your luck.
JAY
It wasn’t ‘luck’. It wasn’t. Here, stand over there.
JAY moves over to CHARLIE and pats his shoulder. He pushes him back slightly.
JAY
Let’s not end up like this, Charlie, a couple of old farts doin’ birthdays and Bar Mitzvahs.
They both chuckle.
CHARLIE
It beats dying.
JAY
Does it?
CHARLIE looks worried.
CHARLIE
I would do anything for you, you know that. But I will not watch you die. I’ll miss that show.
JAY
Nah, you’ll be there. You’re always there for me.
CHARLIE sighs heavily.
JAY
Check your pocket.
CHARLIE checks the breast pocket of his shirt underneath his coat jacket. He pulls out the ace of hearts and laughs.
CHARLIE
That’s good, Jay! That’s pretty damn good!
JAY
(smiling)
I can do it, Charlie. I wanna do it. Please.
CHARLIE smiles then nods. Jay grins happily.
INT. THEATRE – NIGHT
We see a sign above the stage that reads The Incredible Jay.
STAGEHAND
(out of scene)
You gotta let me set up right here.
Scan down shot shows JEB coming around a corner talking on a cell phone.
JEB
(irritated)
It’s a lame gig; I’m in a fleabag hotel doing this Man of the People crap! And freakin’ Angel’s in Vegas doin’ Cirque De Solei! That should have been mine.
JEB hangs up and sits in a chair and we see that at a table nearby are VERNON and CHARLIE watching JEB. DEAN, in his suit, comes up behind them and pulls up a chair.
JEB
(to his camera crew)
Alright boys, get it in gear. I don’t got all day.
DEAN
Are you Vernon Askel?
VERNON
Whose askin’?
DEAN flashes his fake FBI Agents badge.
DEAN
Federal Agent Ulrich. Lookin’ into the death of Patrick Vance.
CAMERAMAN
(out of shot)
5...4...3...2...
Shot to the camera view of JEB as he’s being filmed.
JEB
I’m Jeb Dexter. This is Devil Twist. We’re chillin’ at the International Magician’s Convention which is a dope chance to top my hat to the wicked cat’s who came before me.
Shot reveals that JEB is talking with and sitting across from JAY.
JEB
Smokin’ hot effect last night, Jim.
JAY
Jay.
JAY fans his cards out in his hand.
JEB
Huh?
JAY
My name. It’s Jay.
JEB
Yeah, whatever. We can loop it later.
Shot back to DEAN, VERNON and CHARLIE all watching with the same irritated expression at JEB.
VERNON
What a douchebag.
DEAN
Couldn’t agree more. Is, ah...this familiar to you?
DEAN pulls the tarot card with the sword victim on it out of his pocket and shows it to the men.
JEB
(in background)
I said we can loop it later!
VERNON
Should it be?
DEAN
Well, I heard that you use tarot cards in your act.
VERNON
Act? (laughs) That was a long time ago. I haven’t touched the deck in years.
VERNON holds his hand up and moves it from side to side. DEAN laughs humourlessly.
DEAN
Do you know someone who might, ah, use them now?
VERNON
Well, there was this guy down on Bleaker Street.
CHARLIE
Oh, yeah! He-he peddles that kinda specialty stuff.
DEAN
Did he have a problem with Vance?
VERNON
In fact, Vance crossed him, ‘bout a year ago. Probably cost, ohh...fifty grand in royalties.
CHARLIE nods enthusiastically. DEAN puts the card back into his pocket.
DEAN
You know the exact address?
VERNON
426 Bleaker.
CHARLIE
Ask for Chief.
DEAN
Chief?
CHARLIE
Ah-hum.
DEAN
Thank you.
DEAN gets up and leaves. CHARLIE and VERNON share a look.
EXT - 426 BLEAKER - NIGHT
We see a dark, seedy looking ally. In the distance a siren wails. There’s a homeless man clanging around against the ally wall. The only light is from the florescent red 426 next to a heavy door with metal bars on it. DEAN walks along the alley and comes to the door. He bangs heavily on it. The door opens and from behind the bars is a large, bulky looking GUY with a scowl on his face. He eyes DEAN suspiciously.
DEAN
I’m, uh, here to see Chief?
The GUY raises his eyebrows but lets DEAN in through the door.
Shot of the GUY leading the way down some stairs into a lower part of the building that looks like basement. Heavy metal music can be heard, though stifled, from somewhere else in the building.
GUY
Stay here. Don’t touch anything.
The GUY goes back up the stairs as DEAN looks around. He seems very confused as to why he’s there. Towards the back of the basement, a heavy door opens and the music becomes louder. A heavy-set MAN in a leather cap comes striding up a lower staircase towards DEAN. He is slapping a cat-o-nine tails whip in his hand. We see that he’s wearing all black leather, pants, vest and has silver necklaces around his neck.
MAN
You are really gonna get it tonight, big boy.
DEAN looks more confused and then finally he realizes he’s been tricked by VERNON and CHARLIE.
DEAN
There’s been a misunderstanding. I, ah, think I’ve been had.
MAN
Oh, you ain’t been had, ‘til you’ve been had by the Chief.
DEAN looks mortified.
MAN
Oh, and, before we get started, what’s your safe word?
DEAN looks like he’s gonna be sick.
INT. SAM AND DEAN’S MOTEL ROOM - NIGHT
SAM is still in his FBI clothes, sans the jacket, is at a table typing away at his computer. There’s a knock at the door. SAM looks at his watch, not expecting anyone to visit at this time, and cautiously goes to answer the door. He checks through the peephole and lets out a low breath before opening it. RUBY is standing there waiting with her arms folded. SAM doesn’t look too pleased to see her.
SAM
What are you doing here, Ruby?
RUBY
I should be asking you the same thing.
RUBY walks into the motel room as SAM rolls his eyes and shuts the door behind her.
SAM
I’m workin’ the job.
RUBY
The whole world’s about to be engulfed in hellfire and you’re in Magic Town USA?
SAM laughs.
SAM
You got something against magic?
RUBY
That would almost be funny if thirty-four seals hadn’t been broken already. Thirty-four, Sam! That’s over halfway.
SAM is obviously affected by this news.
RUBY
The angels are losing this war. Every day is one day closer and if someone doesn’t do something soon-
SAM
(angrily)
And that someone is me?
RUBY
(irritated)
Who else would it be?
SAM
I don’t know where these seals are – I don’t know squat! So why don’t you tell me where you’d like me to start?!
RUBY
(heavy attitude)
Well, you can quit dickin’ around here for one thing. Bigger fish, Sam. And if the seals are being broken? Ya might wanna go after the one doin’ the breaking.
SAM
Lilith?
RUBY
Cut the head of the snake. You’re the only one who can stop her, Sam.
RUBY walks up to him so they’re shoulder to shoulder as she’s on her way towards the door.
RUBY
So step up, and kill the little bitch.
SAM
Oh, I’m game, believe me.
RUBY stops leaving and turns back around to face him.
SAM
It’s not the psychic thing I gotta problem with.
RUBY
Yeah, I know, what you got a problem with but tough! It’s the only way!
There’s a loud silence between them.
SAM
(firmly)
No.
RUBY
Y’know, this would all be so much easier if you just admit to yourself that you like it.
SAM almost laughs at this.
RUBY
That feeling that it gives you.
SAM
You don’t know what you’re talking about.
RUBY
Oh, I don’t, huh?
They share a somewhat angry glare.
RUBY
Fine.
She turns and heads for the door, but turns around again just before she reaches it.
RUBY
It’s simple. Lucifer rises, the apocalypse starts. You think you have demons on your hands now? People are gonna die, Sam, oceans of people!
SAM looks nervous.
RUBY
So you just let me know when you’re ready.
This time, RUBY does go leaving Sam with a lot to think about.
INT. THEATRE – NIGHT
SAM is standing in the crowd looking deep in thought. DEAN walks up behind him. Both are still in their FBI outfits.
DEAN
Find anything interesting?
SAM almost doesn’t hear him.
SAM
What? No. You?
DEAN
Nothin’ I wanna talk about...or think about ever again.
We see CHARLIE holding a straight jacket folded in his arms standing with VERNON on the stage. Both look very worried.
VERNON
He’s crazy, and you know it.
CHARLIE
He says he can do it.
VERNON
Did you even try to talk him out of it?
CHARLIE
‘Til I was blue in the face. But I tell ya, Vernon, there was something in his eyes.
VERNON
In his eyes? You’re both nuts.
Scan shot reveals SAM and DEAN walking towards them.
DEAN
The Chief, huh?
CHARLIE has a smug smile.
CHARLIE
What’s the matter? Chief not your type?
DEAN and CHARLIE share a tense chuckle.
DEAN
Y’know, I could have you both arrested for obstruction of justice.
VERNON
How? You’re no Fed.
CHARLIE
We con people for a living, son. Takes more than a fake badge to get past us.
DEAN and SAM laugh nervously; they’ve been made.
DEAN
You got us. Yeah, we are actually...aspiring magicians.
SAM
Yeah, we came to the convention ‘cos we thought we could learn somethin’.
DEAN
Yeah, get some ideas for our new show.
VERNON
(mocking)
Oooh; what kinda show?
DEAN
It’s-it’s, ah...
SAM
It’s a brother act.
DEAN
Yeah! Yeah, you know with rings and doves and...rings.
The crowd start clapping interrupting the witty exchange.
ANNOUNCER
Ladies and Gentlemen I give you The Incredible Jay.
CHARLIE
Wanna learn something? Stick around.
He takes the straight jacket towards the stage. DEAN watches him curiously. We see JAY on the stage standing in front of a platform.
JAY
Ladies and Gentlemen, what you are about to witness is a feat so daring, so dangerous even the great Houdini dared not attempt it. I give to you, The Executioner!
He holds his hand up to the platform. From a railing at the top of it a rope noose hangs down. The crowd applaud in expectation.
INT. JED’S MOTEL ROOM – NIGHT
We see Jeb in full make up practicing facial expressions in a mirror while listening to more speed metal music.
INT. THEATRE – NIGHT
We see the crowd eagerly watching JAY on stage.
JAY
Now, Sir, as you can see this jacket is the real article.
We now see JAY is up on the platform in the strait jacket with the noose around his neck while a man, presumably someone he’s picked from the crowd, is checking how tight the restraints are.
JAY
Thank you, Sir, you may take your seat.
The man walks off the platform.
JAY
Now I will have one minute, sixty seconds, to escape certain death.
We see VERNON, DEAN and SAM watching on earnestly.
JAY
Let’s see if I can do it.
JAY looks noticeably nervous as CHARLIE closes the curtains in front of the platform. A timer above the stage starts counting down the sixty seconds setting off a small light bulb every time it hits a five second mark. We can see JAY’s silhouette as he struggles to free himself.
INT. JED’S MOTEL ROOM – NIGHT
JED is still practicing his act, getting more and more over the top with his movements and the way he walks. He doesn’t notice that on a mannequin where a rope noose is loosely draped, it starts to move like a snake and uncoil off the mannequin. We see JED’s reflection as he styles his hair. In his reflection behind him we see the rope noose slithering up the wall and across the roof. It coils once around the ceiling fan and then the noose lowers down.
INT. THEATRE – NIGHT
We see the timer still counting down; JAY has thirty-five seconds remaining. We see by his silhouette that he’s still struggling. DEAN and SAM watch on nervously. DEAN is starting to look worried. We can hear JAY grunting as he tries to break free. The crowd watch on; clearly also worried. We see the clock again, fifteen seconds remaining. Then ten seconds.
DEAN
I don’t think he’s gonna make it.
Time’s up. The clock buzzer goes off. From JAY’s silhouette, we see the false floor break through an the noose tighten. It seems as though JAY has strangled himself. The crowd cry out in horror and many get up from their seats.
INT. JED’S MOTEL ROOM – NIGHT
The noose loops around JED’s neck, the fan turns making the noose pull him up in the air; hanging him tightly.
INT. THEATRE – NIGHT
CHARLIE pulls back the screen in front of the platform and JAY is standing there, fit as can be, with the strait jacket in hand. The crowd roar in appreciation. JAY tosses the strait jacket aside. DEAN looks genuinely impressed.
DEAN
Oh! That was amazing! That was frickin amazing!
SAM just looks utterly dumbfounded.
SAM
That was...not humanly possible.
INT. JED’S MOTEL ROOM – NIGHT
The speed metal music is still playing loudly as JED’s clearly dead body spins around by the nose on the fan.
INT. SAM AND DEAN’S MOTEL ROOM – DAY
We see Dean sitting on his bed reading some books and papers.
SAM V.O.
Looks like this guy Jay was a pretty big deal in the seventies.
DEAN
Which in Magician Land means what exactly?
We see SAM sitting at the table in front of his laptop.
SAM
Big enough to play a Radio City Music Hall.
DEAN
What got him stuck in the Where Are They Now file?
SAM
(no other answer)
He got old.
DEAN and SAM share a look at this statement.
DEAN
Ok, so maybe...Incredible Jay is using real magic to stage a comeback.
SAM
It’s possible; some kinda spell that works a death transference.
DEAN
How’s the tarot card mix into it?
SAM
I dunno.
SAM goes back to searching on his laptop. DEAN shakes his head and gets to his feet.
DEAN
Man...I hope I die before I get old.
SAM looks at him; this is news to him.
DEAN
The thing seems brutal, don’t it?
DEAN looks at the tarot card. SAM obviously has something on his mind.
SAM
Think we will?
DEAN
What?
SAM
Die before we get old.
DEAN
(smug)
Haven’t we both already?
SAM
You know what I mean, Dean. Do you still think we’ll be...chasing demons when we’re sixty?
DEAN
(bluntly)
No, I think we’ll be dead. For good.
SAM laughs humourlessly.
DEAN
What, you wanna end up like-like Travis? Or Gordon, maybe?
SAM
There’s Bobby.
DEAN
Oh, yeah, there’s a poster child for growing old gracefully.
DEAN laughs and goes back to sit on his bed. SAM looks a little dejected.
SAM
Maybe we’ll be different, Dean.
DEAN
(scoffs)
What kinda Cool Aid you drinkin’, man?
SAM looks more dejected.
DEAN
Sammy, it ends bloody or sad. That’s just the life.
SAM looks very effected by this. He shuts his laptop and looks out the window.
SAM
(hopeful)
What if we could win?
DEAN
(sceptical)
Win?
SAM
If there was a way we could just...put an end to all of it.
DEAN senses there’s more to what he’s saying.
DEAN
Is there somethin’ going on that you’re not tellin’ me?
SAM
No.
DEAN
Sammy.
SAM
No! I’m just saying, I...
SAM gets to his feet.
SAM
I just wish there was a way we could...go after the source, that’s all. Cut the head off the snake.
DEAN considers this for a short moment.
DEAN
Well, the problem with the snake is that it has a thousand heads. Evil bitches just keep piling outta the Volkswagen.
SAM has his arms folded and takes on what his brothers has said, but he doesn’t look happy about it.
SAM
Yeah...I guess you’re right.
DEAN watches him for a second.
DEAN
Well, let’s go see if you can track down Jay. I’ll see what I can dig up on this tarot card.
INT. JED’S MOTEL – DAY
We see a flamboyant poster of JEB DEXTER on the back of a wall. In the poster, JEB has his hands out at his sides with his palms up and there are bolts of lightning emitting from them into the air. The camera pulls back and we see a coroner pulling along a gurney with a body bag on it. Obviously it’s JEB in the bag. SAM comes through the front doors of the motel as the coroner takes the body out. We see DEAN in the foreground of the shot. SAM goes over to him.
SAM
Hey.
DEAN
So the maid found Jeb hanging from his ceiling fan. The police think it was a suicide. I beg to differ.
DEAN takes another tarot card out of his pocket.
DEAN
(proudly)
Pulled a little slight of hand myself.
SAM takes the card. We see that it’s labelled The Hanged Man and depicts a picture of a man hanging upside down from a tree.
SAM
On Dexter’s body?
DEAN
Yeah. That’s what I’m thinking. If this spell is a death transference, then these cards work like black magic targets.
SAM
Any connection between the victims?
DEAN
Jeb was a total douchebag to Jay yesterday.
SAM
What about the first vic? Vance?
DEAN
Asked around, apparently Vance was heckling Jay at the bar the day he was killed.
The brothers share a knowing look; obviously suspecting JAY. They start walking further into the motel.
SAM
Ok, so Jay sneaks a card into Vance’s pocket, does the table of death...
DEAN
And Vance takes ten swords to the chest.
SAM
Then Jay slips a noose and Jeb doesn’t. Helluva trick.
DEAN
Yeah, it’s time we had a little chat with Jay. Any luck tailin’ him?
SAM
(sheepish)
He slipped me.
DEAN
He’s a sixty-year-old man.
SAM
He’s a magician.
INT. JAY’S MOTEL – DAY
We see JAY walking along the hall to his room. He unlocks the door and goes in. At the end of the hall around the corner, SAM and DEAN’s heads pop out. As JAY goes into his room, SAM and DEAN head down the hall. We see they both have pistols in their hands. They pause outside JAY’s door and make sure no one’s around. DEAN kicks the door in with ease. Both brothers storm into JAY’s room with their guns at the ready. JAY looks shocked.
JAY
Oh my God.
DEAN
Up against the wall!
JAY
Who are you? What do you want?
DEAN
Now!
SAM
We know what you’ve been up to!
JAY just looks stunned but he holds his hands up anyway.
DEAN
Been workin’ some real bad mojo to jump start your act.
JAY
(confused)
What? I dunno what you’re talking about.
SAM
We know you put a spell on those tarot cards.
DEAN
Messing with real magic.
JAY
Real magic?
(laughs nervously)
C’mon, there’s no such thing as real magic.
DEAN
Oh, is that so?
JAY
Yeah, believe me, I’ve been around this stuff my whole life, it’s all just-its-its illusions. Its tricks, its-
JAY takes a step forwards but SAM and DEAN are ready and both tighten their grips on their guns and make him stay put.
JAY
It’s all fake.
DEAN
Jeb Dexter strung up; was that just an illusion?
JAY is clearly shocked by this news.
JAY
What? Something happened to Jeb?
SAM
He was found hanged in his room.
JAY still looks shocked.
DEAN
Right after you slipped the noose last night.
JAY
I don’t know what you’re talking about. Please, just let me go.
DEAN and SAM realize they may not have the right guy after all.
DEAN
Something’s not right.
SAM
Usually they’re whoopin’ some bad ass hoodoo at us by now.
DEAN
What do you wanna do?
INT. JAY’S MOTEL – LATER
SAM and DEAN have tied JAY to a chair in the centre of the room. The brothers are standing away from him and the camera centres around them, not JAY.
SAM
Alright, so if it’s not him, who is it?
DEAN
Even if Jay’s not workin’ the magic, he’s still gettin’ the reward. His shows are sellin’ out.
The camera just pans, close up, around DEAN and SAM.
SAM
Alright...so then whoever it is, they’re obviously in Jay’s corner.
DEAN
Alright, so we got Vernon and Charlie on the list, anyone else?
SAM
(shrugs)
Ah...we could ask him.
DEAN nods in agreement. But when the both look back to JAY, we all see that he’s gone and the rope restraints are just lying on the floor. DEAN and SAM look sheepish.
DEAN
Guess we shoulda seen that one comin’.
SAM
Come on; he couldn’t have gotten that far.
DEAN and SAM hurry out the front door. A closet door opens and JAY steps out; this is where he was hiding. He looks around to make sure no one’s in the room.
INT. JAY’S MOTEL FOYER – DAY
DEAN and SAM hurry down the stairs to the foyer but don’t see JAY.
SAM
No way he could outrun us.
DEAN
Maybe he vanished? I mean, he really is good.
SAM
Or he found a back door.
Outside the window of the hotel, a police car pulls up and two officers get out with their guns at the ready. Jay suddenly comes running down the stairs behind DEAN and SAM.
That’s them; those are the two nutjobs who just broke into my room!
OFFICER
Freeze! Hand’s where I can see ‘em!
We see two officers with their guns pointed at SAM and DEAN. The brothers sheepishly put their hands in the air.
INT. THEATRE – NIGHT
We see CHARLIE shining his shoes.
JAY
They said my act was killing people. They said that I was using real magic, that I was casting spells on tarot cards.
Now we see JAY pacing in front of CHARLIE in an area that is most likely backstage at the theatre. Both men are getting ready for the night and are in suits.
CHARLIE
Real magic? Those guys are nuts.
(suddenly gets serious)
You’re lucky to be alive.
JAY looks thoughtful.
JAY
You don’t think...
CHARLIE
What?
JAY
The things that I can do now, the cards.
CHARLIE
(dismissive)
You’ve been working the cards your whole life.
JAY
But what about the escapes? I haven’t been able to slip a pair of cuffs in thirty years! And then there was the way that-that Patrick Vance died and that Jeb Dexter-
CHARLIE
No great loss there.
JAY
Aw, Charlie, he didn’t deserve to die.
CHARLIE
Well, you had nothing to do with it.
JAY
He was hanged the same night I performed the Executioner!
CHARLIE
Wait a minute...are you telling me that you actually believe those guys? That there was some kinda real magic involved?
JAY
No...I don’t know...Maybe.
CHARLIE just shakes his head and goes back to shining his shoes.
JAY
I shouldn’t go on tonight Charlie.
CHARLIE does not like this idea one bit. He gets to his feet to protest.
CHARLIE
Are you kidding me? You have a sold out house out there, sold out! When was the last time that happened?
JAY doesn’t answer. CHARLIE knows something is going on. JAY turns to him.
JAY
The other night...when I was doing the Table of Death...I was, um...I was gonna kill myself. And I have no idea how I got out alive.
CHARLIE looks very troubled by this news then his attitude changes and he shrugs.
CHARLIE
But you did. Somehow you did.
JAY nods. CHARLIE puts a hand on his shoulder.
CHARLIE
Jay, when you were in your day, you were incredible. The Incredible Jay. You were the best I ever saw.
JAY smiles at the memory.
CHARLIE
And now you got ‘em back. I dunno how, but it doesn’t matter. Just to see you at the top of your game again (laughs) hell, it makes me feel young.
JAY
But-
CHARLIE
(forceful)
No buts, Jay! This may be manner from heaven, I dunno. But whatever it is, you don’t throw it away.
INT. THEATRE – NIGHT
JAY and CHARLIE are in the middle of the Executioner routine. CHARLIE is lighting the string attached to the rope. We see JAY’s silhouette as he struggles in the shackles. The crowd are looking on nervously. We see JAY trying to break free and the spikes hanging precariously above him. CHARLIE goes behind the curtain to VERNON, they share a quick look, and then CHARLIE goes backstage. VERNON watches him leave, a little confused. We see JAY’s silhouette struggling again. The rope is almost burned through. We see JAY looking particularly scared this time. Nervous murmurs run through the crowd. The rope burns through, the spikes drop. Scared cries ring out through the audience. There is a long wait, many of the crowd are on their feet. Then JAY appears from behind the curtains completely unharmed. The crowd roars in appreciation and give him a standing ovation. JAY grins happily and bows a few times. All of a sudden, a woman’s chilling scream comes from back stage.
WOMAN
AHHHHHH!!!!!! OH MY GOD!!! Somebody call 9-1-1!
JAY looks shocked and runs back stage. The crowd question what’s going on.
INT. BACKSTAGE OF THEATRE – NIGHT
The camera scans across the floor to show CHARLIE dead with stab wounds bleeding through his shirt; the same way VANCE died. JAY comes into the room and sees his friend. He looks mortified.
INT. JAY’S MOTEL – NIGHT
We see the shot from inside looking outside through the window onto the street. SAM and DEAN are coming into the building; obviously with a purpose. We see JAY waiting for them in the foyer.
SAM
Jay. Thanks for droppin’ the charges.
DEAN
You mind tellin’ us why you did it?
JAY looks uncomfortable.
JAY
We have to talk.
INT. BAR – NIGHT
JAY drinks what looks like scotch or whiskey at a table at a bar. SAM and DEAN are sitting across from him.
JAY
I was just a kid when we first met. All I knew was how to cheat at cards, Charlie got me outta more scrapes then I can count.
SAM seems to relate to this knowledge and glances at his brother.
JAY
Hell, I woulda been dead by the age of twenty if it hadn’t been for him. He was more than my friend. He was my brother.
This time it’s DEAN who glances at SAM.
SAM
I’m sorry, Jay.
JAY
Look, I shoulda listened to you guys when you told me that my show was killing people.
DEAN
Well...you weren’t the one pullin’ the trigger.
JAY
Yeah, but someone did and I wanna find out who did this to Charlie so I’ll do whatever you guys say, just tell me what to do.
SAM
Jay, whoever’s doin’ this...they like you. They’re probably close to you.
JAY looks puzzled.
SAM
Did Charlie and Vernon get along?
JAY
(refuses to believe this)
No, no its not Vernon.
DEAN
He’s the only one that makes sense.
SAM
Charlie and Vernon were your family, Jay.
DEAN
And now Charlie’s gone.
JAY
Yeah, but...they butted heads sometimes but Vernon could never do something like this.
DEAN has a knowing look on his face. The camera focuses on him.
DEAN
See, the thing about real magic is, is it’s a whole lot like crack...people do surprising things when they get a taste of it.
SAM looks over at him; clearly thinking he might be talking about him and not just VERNON. JAY looks unconvinced.
JAY
You better be damn sure about this. Vernon is all I got left.
He looks quite sad as he drinks some more.
INT. VERNON’S MOTEL – NIGHT
VERNON is sitting on his bed watching TV. He has some books on the bed around him. The phone rings and he answers it.
VERNON
Yeah?...oh, ok...yeah, I’ll be there in two shakes...I got somethin’ to tell ya anyway.
He hangs up the phone, shuts off the TV and gets to his feet. We see him leave his motel room and lock the door behind him. He walks down the hall. At the opposite end, we see SAM and DEAN hiding behind the corner. Shot of SAM picking the lock on VERNON’s door as he and DEAN enter cautiously. They look around the room and notice all the magic trick instruments.
SAM
Wow, it’s like a magic museum.
DEAN
You must be in heaven.
SAM makes an unimpressed face.
DEAN
This guy didn’t travel light.
SAM
He’s been on the road his whole life, probably everything he owns is in this room.
DEAN
Let’s get started.
INT. THEATRE – NIGHT
Shot of VERNON as he runs into the theatre towards the stage. JAY is standing with his back to VERNON looking at the platform with the spikes on it.
VERNON
Just talked to the head of the convention, the headliner gig is yours.
JAY turns around to VERNON but doesn’t seem happy with this news.
VERNON
What? You don’t want it?
JAY
A day ago if you told me I’d be standing on this stage... (sighs) nah, I can’t do it Vernon.
VERNON
What are you talking about?
JAY
Charlie’s gone.
VERNON
Charlie would’ve wanted you to go on. This is your shot; it’s our shot.
JAY
Really?
VERNON nods.
JAY
This is what Charlie would’ve wanted?
JAY starts getting upset as he walks towards VERNON
JAY
Charlie’s dead.
VERNON
Hey, he was my friend, too, y’know.
JAY
Helluva a way to treat a friend.
VERNON
Again; what’re you talking about?
JAY
You kill him, didn’t you? And for what? So that I – so that we – could be back on top?
VERNON
That’s insane. (laughs) No, you’re scaring me now-
JAY
(furious)
First it was Vance, then it was Jeb Dexter! Even if you thought you were doin’ it for me, how in God’s name could you do that to Charlie?
VERNON
Ooh, you are crazy.
JAY
You used me and you used my act to do this to him. If you think-!
MAN
(out of scene)
I wouldn’t be so hard on him, Jay. He didn’t do it.
JAY turns around. From backstage, a young man walks onto the stage. JAY does a double take when he sees him. He has a scar over his right eye. Charlie.
INT. VERNON’S MOTEL – NIGHT
DEAN is looking through VERNON’s things.
DEAN
It’s just a bunch of ol’ timey magic stuff. None of it magic.
Shot of SAM who is also poking around.
SAM
No herbs, no candles and no tarot cards.
DEAN looks over some old posters advertising magician’s shows. He pauses on one that shows a drawing of young CHARLIE.
DEAN
I’ll be damned.
SAM
What?
DEAN shows the poster to SAM. The focus is on CHARLIE’s head; we see his scar. It’s definitely him.
DEAN
Look like anyone we know?
INT. THEATRE – NIGHT
The scar on the poster fades into the real scar on CHARLIE’s head at the stage. JAY and VERNON look on in awe.
VERNON
Mother of God.
JAY
Charlie?
CHARLIE
It’s really me, Jay.
JAY looks completely shocked.
VERNON
How the hell-
CHARLIE
God, you forget what it feels like to be young. It’s amazing.
VERNON
How old are you?
CHARLIE
Oh, it depends on what you mean by old, I mean, right now technically about twenty-eight. But I’ve been around a lot longer than that.
JAY
How long?
CHARLIE
Long enough to have shilled for Barnum. And he gave me something.
JAY
What’s that?
CHARLIE
The grimoire. A book of real magic. At first I thought it was a scam but then I tried one of the spells and it worked. In fact, they all worked. So when I got to the end and there was one for immortality...
VERNON
(approaching CHARLIE)
My God...Charlie...
JAY
And my show, the things that I can do?
CHARLIE
Different spell. But it gives you a little taste of what’s possible.
CHARLIE takes a deck of tarot cards out of his pocket, fans them out and holds them up. VERNON reaches for them.
CHARLIE
Oh, no, I wouldn’t touch those Vernon they’re-they’re still radioactive.
JAY looks horrified.
JAY
You killed Vance and Jeb Dexter.
CHARLIE
What, you think this is a parlour game? You were being humiliated by those punks. A washed up old man who couldn’t even defend himself?
JAY
You used me, to do these terrible things?
CHARLIE
I used them to give you a gift. And you wanted it, Jay, I saw it in your eyes.
JAY shakes his head.
JAY
No, I never wanted this.
CHARLIE
You were going to kill yourself. I saved your life.
VERNON
Is that right, Jay?
CHARLIE
I was there for you, like I’ve always been. Like I’ll always be. Come with me, both of you. You think the first time around was good, the second time’s even better.
VERNON seems to be considering this while JAY still remains horrified.
CHARLIE
All the knowhow, none of the aches and pain.
JAY looks at VERNON; sensing his consideration of CHARLIE’s offer.
JAY
No, I won’t do this. I won’t.
CHARLIE
I’ve never made this offer before but, then again, I’ve never had friends like the two of you before. Let me do this for you.
JAY
And who else has to die so that we can live forever? What’s the price tag on immortality?
CHARLIE looks guilty.
JAY
This isn’t right, Charlie, what you’re doing, you know that. Somewhere, you know that.
CHARLIE
I know I don’t wanna come back alone, to start all over alone.
CHARLIE and JAY share a sad look.
VERNON
Jay...we can be young again.
CHARLIE
The three of us together; vital and alive. Forever.
DEAN V.O.
Not so fast!
Shot reveals DEAN and SAM coming into the theatre and towards the stage with their guns at their sides.
DEAN
I ain’t Guttenberg and this ain’t Cocoon.
DEAN and SAM get up on the stage. CHARLIE is standing between VERNON and JAY. DEAN gestures with his gun for the older men to move. VERNON and JAY move aside so DEAN is facing off with CHARLIE.
DEAN
Immortality? That’s a neat trick.
CHARLIE
That’s not a trick.
Suddenly, a noose falls down from the sky and wraps tightly around DEAN’s neck.
CHARLIE
It’s magic.
The rope tugs upwards and DEAN is pulled up off his feet. SAM shoots his gun at CHARLIE whose head snaps to the side, but he’s not injured. He turns back to SAM and removes the bullet from his mouth into his hand.
CHARLIE
Hey, bullet catch, been working on that.
CHARLIE tosses the bullet into the air. SAM watches the bullet as CHARLIE disappears into thin air. DEAN is still struggling in the noose.
DEAN
Get him!
SAM looks around and sees a smug looking CHARLIE on the other side of the stage.
SAM
Let him go! Now!
CHARLIE
Just leave me and my friends alone.
SAM
I said now!
JAY is watching on in distress.
CHARLIE
(insincere)
Alright, I will give it up. The spells, the hexes, this is the last time, I promise.
DEAN is still struggling. SAM, not believing CHARLIE, lunges at him with the butt of his gun but CHARLIE disappears before he connects with him. He reappears behind SAM just as SAM turns around and CHARLIE shoves him. SAM lands on the Table of Death and CHARLIE telepathically makes all the shackles lock around his ankles and wrists. We see the rope holding up the spikes and it’s fraying. SAM looks up and sees the spikes. He unsuccessfully tries to break free. JAY looks from SAM up to DEAN who is obviously losing the battle with the noose. SAM keeps struggling as the rope holding up the spikes frays again. CHARLIE watches them both with an almost proud look on his face. DEAN is obviously running out of air. The rope frays once more; won’t be long until it falls. CHARLIE looks at JAY and then suddenly clutches his abdomen. SAM looks over at CHARLIE then at JAY. We see JAY has stabbed himself in the abdomen with a knife in the same place where CHARLIE is now bleeding. JAY removes the knife from his body and it’s clean whereas CHARLIE falls to his knees bleeding heavily. VERNON is watching on in horror. We see that DEAN is practically choking. We see JAY removed CHARLIE’s tarot cards from his pocket; he’s pick-pocketed him.
CHARLIE
Jay...
CHARLIE checks his own pocket and pulls out one single tarot card. He realizes JAY has killed him the same way CHARLIE killed VANCE and JEB
JAY
You pick these strangers over me?
JAY looks on in disbelief as CHARLIE falls forwards, dead, onto the stage. He rolls onto his back and we see a close-up of the tarot card still clutched in his hand depicting a man holding up a dagger. Suddenly the shackles on SAM release themselves and DEAN drops down from the roof gasping for air. SAM quickly gets off the table as DEAN yanks the noose off his neck. Just as SAM gets up, the rope snaps and the spikes fall onto the now vacated table. DEAN is coughing and spluttering for air.
SAM
You ok?
DEAN
Yeah. Yeah, I’m alright.
SAM looks up at JAY who is still staring down at CHARLIE’s dead body. He looks heartbroken.
INT. BAR – NIGHT
JAY is drinking alone at a table playing with his deck of cards. He already looks a little drunk. Camera scans around to the door where SAM and DEAN come in. They spot JAY looking depressed as he lazily plays with his cards. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. SAM and DEAN join him at his table.
DEAN
Hey, Jay. We wanted to, ah, thank you for what you did yesterday.
JAY
I killed my best friend yesterday and you wanna thank me?
DEAN looks a little lost for words. He and SAM share a sad look.
SAM
Where’s Vernon?
JAY
Oh, he’s gone. Said he didn’t wanna speak to me again after what I did to Charlie.
SAM looks very sorry for the man.
DEAN
Listen, Jay, you know Charlie was never gonna give up what he was doing. Ever.
JAY nods.
DEAN
You did the right thing.
JAY
You sure about that? You know Charlie was like my brother. And now he’s dead. Because I did the right thing.
JAY gets to his feet; very distressed.
JAY
He offered me a gift and I just threw it back in his face.
JAY holds up his playing cards and stumbles a little. He tosses his cards on the table.
JAY
So now I have to spend the rest of my life old and alone.
JAY finishes off his drink and starts to leave. But he pauses just by DEAN.
JAY
What’s so right about that?
JAY scoffs a little then leaves a guilt ridden SAM and DEAN behind as he leaves the bar. The same female BARTENDER from the start of the episode comes over to clear JAY’s table and picks up his playing cards that he left behind.
BARTENDER
Jay, your cards.
JAY just looks empty as he turns back to her.
JAY
Throw ‘em away.
The BARTENDER is troubled by this news as JAY leaves the bar for good. DEAN turns to his brother.
DEAN
Well, I dunno ‘bout you, I could go for a beer.
SAM looks very serious.
SAM
I’m gonna take a walk.
DEAN looks curiously after his brother as SAM leaves the bar, but DEAN doesn’t follow.
EXT. ALLEY BESIDE BAR – NIGHT
A car is waiting with its headlights on. There is someone behind the wheel. SAM comes into view and walks around to the passenger’s side and opens the door. We see that RUBY is the one driving.
SAM
Ok, I’m in.
SAM gets into the car.
RUBY
What changed your mind?
SAM looks sad.
SAM
I don’t wanna be doin’ this when I’m an old man.
They drive away.
