TEASER
We open to a street, and we hear someone running on it, the camera moving just in front of the person as we see the top of his shadow. The person is panting and the camera slowly moves along his shadow and then we see his legs and as we move up his body, it becomes obvious that it's DEAN and he's running for his life. We get a shot from behind him, and it's clear he's being chased. As he runs past the camera in the third angle we suddenly hear the growl and vicious barks of Hellhounds. This chase resembles the one DEAN dreamed in the beginning of "NO REST FOR THE WICKED". DEAN runs as fast as he can while we hear the Hellhounds on his trail. He throws a few glances back and continues to pump his legs. As he rounds a corner he runs into a shoppingcart filled with crap. He tumbles down with it. A homeless man looks over at him as he frantically gets up. DEAN stands still, scared.
DEAN
Run!
He points towards the Hellhound and looks at the homeless man.
DEAN
It'll kill you!
The homeless man remains calm and just looks over at what DEAN is pointing to. The camera moves over to reveal... a tiny Yorkie with a pink bow. It's sitting down and looking adorable. DEAN looks at it, terrified, and we hear it growl at him. When the camera gives a closeup it just makes a little cute doggy-sound. DEAN stares at it and begins to back away and then turns and runs off, screaming. Soon we see the little yorkie running after him again, barking.

The IMPALA, with DEAN behind the wheels, shows up, driving past the mill.
SUBTITLE
43 Hours Earlier
INT. MORGUE
A bodybag is unzipped and reveals a male body.
CORONER
Agent Tyler, agent Perry. Meet Frank O'Brien.
SAM and DEAN is standing on the other side of the body, dressed in suits.
SAM
He died of a heart attack, right?
CORONER
Three days ago.
SAM
Hm. But O'Brien was 44 years old and, according to this-
He opens a folder and looks down at the papers in it. DEAN looks over as well
SAM
-a marathon runner.
CORONER
Everybody drops dead sooner or later. It's why I got job security.
DEAN
Yeah, but Frank kicked it here.
SAM closes the folder and looks up at the CORONER.
DEAN
Now, just yesterday, two perfectly healthy men bit it in Maumee. All heart attacks. You don't think that's strange?
CORONER
Sounds like Maumee's problem to me. Why's the FBI give a damn, anyway?
DEAN
We just want to see the results of Frank's autopsy.
CORONER
What autopsy?
DEAN
The one you're gonna do.
CUT TO: LATER
The CORONER puts the scalpel down and makes the regular cut that one does during an autopsy. He throws a glance at the boys.
CORONER
First dead body?
DEAN and SAM are both dressed in appropriate cover from spatter.
DEAN
Far from it.
CORONER
Oh, good. Because these suckers can get pretty ripe. Hey, uh, hand me those rib cutters, would you?
DEAN picks up the cutters from the plate next to him and hands them over to the CORONER. The CORONER begins to cut and SAM looks a bit queazy. DEAN looks down on FRANK's left hand and notices a white line over his ringfinger.
DEAN
Is that from a wedding ring? I didn't think Frank was married.
CORONER
Ain't my department.
SAM
Any idea how he got these?
SAM takes hold of FRANK's wrist and slowly picks up his arm and turns it over, revealing deep scrathes along his arm.
CORONER
You know what? When you drop dead, you actually tend to drop. Body probably got scraped up when it hit the ground.
SAM puts down the arm again.
CORONER
Huh.
SAM
What?
CORONER
Well, I-I can't find any blockages in any of the major arteries.
DEAN scrounges up his face in a bit of disgust. The CORONER cracks a rib and pulls out the heart. As he holds it in his hands DEAN turns his head away, looking like he's about to throw up. He turns back but doesn't look and bites it together, trying not to throw up.
CORONER
Heart looks pretty damn healthy.
Suddenly he holds out the heart to DEAN.
CORONER
Hold that a second, would you?
DEAN takes it and just stands completely still, staring at it in his hands. SAM looks over at it, silently laughing at him. The CORONER continues his search through FRANK's body and as he goes for another part of him, we hear a squishy noise and suddenly bodyfluids shoots up and hits SAM in the face. Both DEAN and the CORONER looks over at him.
CORONER
Oh, sorry. Spleen juice.
Now DEAN doesn't feel so bad about the heart and begins to smile.
INT. POLICE STATION
The boys are still wearing suits, sitting out by the reception where a young male officer is putting stamps on envelops. The boys shifts uncomfortably in their two wooden chairs. We hear the train in the background but that's it. Suddenly the young officer puts down the envelope he was working on and smiles at the boys, looking over at them where they're sitting across from him on the other side of the room. DEAN gives a little smile in respons. Suddenly the sheriff opens his officedoor and peeks out.
SHERIFF
Hell's bells, Linus, have you seen my...
He sees DEAN and SAM, who gets up out of their chairs. The SHERIFF comes out of his office and looks at them quizically.
SHERIFF
Who are they?
LINUS
Federal agents. I uh..
SHERIFF
And you kept them waiting?
LINUS looks a little confused.
LINUS
You, you said not to disturb.
SHERIFF
Come on back, fellas.
He motions with his arm to his office, waving them over. DEAN throws a smile at LINUS as he and SAM walks over to the SHERIFF's office. The SHERIFF is standing by his open door and when the boys reach him, he holds out a hand as stop so they won't enter.
SHERIFF
Shoes off.
SAM and DEAN takes off their shoes, turns back around to the SHERIFF. DEAN gives a smile and they enter.
INT. SHERIFF'S OFFICE
The boys stop just inside the door, looking around, while they wait for the SHERIFF to close the door and come over. He walks around DEAN and holds out his hand to him.
SHERIFF
Al Britton.
DEAN shakes his hand but doesn't give a name back. AL and SAM shake hands as well.
AL
Good to meet you.
SAM
You too.
As AL walks around his desk he holds out his hand to the chairs in front of it.
SAM
Thank you.
The boys takes a seat. AL grabs a bottle of hand sanitizer from his desk and picks it up.
AL
Okay.
He pours out some of the sanitizer in his hand, while the boys watch, and then he rubs it on his hands. DEAN and SAM exchange puzzled looks. AL takes his time rubbing it on, while looking at the boys.
AL
So...
He closes the lid on his laptop and sits down.
AL
What can I do for uncle Sam?
SAM
Well, we're looking into the death of Frank O'Brien. We understand some of your men found his body.
AL looks sad.
AL
They did. Me and Frank, we were friends. Hell, we were Gamecocks.
DEAN can't control himself at that last statement and laughs a little. AL gives him a look and he quickly gathers himself and looks serious again.
AL
That's our softball team's name.
DEAN
Mm.
AL
They're majestic animals.
DEAN doesn't know what to say.
AL
I knew Frank since high school. To be honest, I just this morning got up the strength to go see him. Frank was... He was a good man.
DEAN
Yeah. Big heart.
SAM looks over at DEAN with that comment, scowling.
SAM
Before he died, did you notice Frank acting strange? Maybe scared of something?
AL
Oh, hell, yeah. Real jumpy.
SAM
You know what scared him?
AL
No. Wouldn't answer his phone. Finally, I sent some of my boys over to check on him, and well... You know the rest.
AL begins to cough real bad with one hand in front of his mouth, and grabs the hand sanitizer again. When he's finished coughing he again rubs on sanitizer. DEAN looks at him like he's really weird and then looks at SAM.
DEAN
(mouthing)
What?
They both watch him rub the sanitizer on.
AL
So, why the feds give a crap? You don't really think there's a case here?
SAM
No.
DEAN
No. It's uh, it's probably nothing. Just a heart attack.
EXT. STREET
SAM and DEAN are walking away from the police station, talking.
DEAN
No way that was a heart attack.
SAM
Definitely no way. Three victims, all with those same red scratches, all went from jittery to terrified to dead within 48 hours.
DEAN
Something scared them to death?
SAM
Alright, so, what can do that?
DEAN
What can't? Ghosts, vampires, chupacabra? It could be a hundred things.
SAM
Yeah. So, we make a list and start crossing things off.
DEAN
Alrigt, who's the last person to see Frank O'Brien alive?
SAM
Uh, his neighbor, Mark Hutchins.
DEAN sees something up ahead.
DEAN
Hang on, hang on, hey.
SAM
What?
They stop walking, facing each other.
DEAN
I don't like the looks of those teenagers down there.
SAM looks over and we see four boys, two on bikes, hanging around just in front of the IMPALA. They seem harmless, only having fun with each other. SAM looks back at DEAN, eyebrows raised.
DEAN
Let's walk this way.
DEAN crosses the street, his eyes on the boys. SAM stands still, watching DEAN go, looking confused at DEAN's actions.
INT. HUTCHINS RESIDENCE
We open to an aquarium and then the camera pans up over it and we see DEAN and SAM sitting on a couch across from it, and a man, MARK, sitting in a chair with his back to us. We see that there's a lot of different cages and such around the room, holding frogs, snakes, lizards and whatnot.
MARK
Tyler and Perry. Just like Aerosmith.
MARK has a big snake around his shoulders. DEAN looks very unsettled, looking around.
SAM
Yeah, small world. So, the last time you saw Frank O'Brien?
MARK
Monday. He was watching me from his window.
He looks over at the window on their side, and the boys looks over at it as well.
MARK
I waved at him, but he just closed the curtains.
SAM
Hmm. Did you speak to him recently? Did he seem different? Uh, scared?
MARK
Oh, totally. He was freaking out.
SAM looks over at DEAN, who's looking very, very unsettled now, his eyes big and he keeps looking around.
DEAN
Do you know, uh... Do you know what scared him?
MARK
Well, yeah. Witches.
SAM
Witches?
They boys exchange a look.
SAM
Like...?
MARK
Well, "Wizard of Oz" was on tv the other night, right? And he said that green bitch was totally out to get him.
DEAN and SAM exchange another look at that, going "okay..." basically.
SAM
Anything else scare him?
MARK
Everything else scared him. Al-Qaida, ferrets, artificial sweetener.
The camera slowly closes up on DEAN who looks a bit freaked when we hear a sound from one of the animals. We get shots of a lizard and then a hairy spider.
MARK
Those pez dispensers with their dead little eyes. Lots of stuff.
SAM
So, tell me. What was Frank like?
DEAN looks over at MARK.
MARK
I mean, he's dead, you know? I, ah, I don't want to hammer him, but... he got better.
SAM
He got better?
MARK
Well, in high school he was... he was a dick.
SAM
A dick?
MARK
Like a bully.
MARK
I mean, he probably taped half the town's buttcheeks together.
DEAN laughs a little at that.
MARK
Mine included.
DEAN clears his throat.
DEAN
So he pissed a lot of people off. You think anyone would have wanted to get revenge?
MARK
Well, I don't...
He looks at them back and forth.
MARK
Frank had a heart attack, right?
SAM
Just answer the question, sir.
MARK
No. I don't think so. Like I said, he got better. And after what happened to his wife.
DEAN
His wife?
The boys exchange a look.
DEAN
So he was married?
MARK
She died about 20 years ago. Frank was really broken up about it.
DEAN smiles a very smal smile and then looks at the snake around MARK's shoulders. MARK notices and look down on it too and then he looks back at DEAN, laughing a little.
MARK
Don't be scared of Donny. He's a sweetheart. It's Marie you got to look out for.
He motions his head and we see Marie, the snake, suddenly show up on the back of the couch, right next to DEAN.
MARK
She smells fear.
SAM glances over at DEAN and then he really looks over when he sees the snake. DEAN slowly turns his head towards Marie, who's slowly slithering down the couch next to him. DEAN quickly turns away, breathing out, scared. He looks over at MARK and gives him a frightened smile. MARK just smiles back. We then see Marie slithering down over DEAN's thigh and hand and down along his left leg. She's a very big yellow snake. DEAN looks freaked and trying to control himself.
INT. IMPALA - NIGHT
DEAN is sitting alone in the car, reading a printout that he's propped up on the steeringwheel. He's got his left hand resting on the wheel and he's scratching that same arm with his right. Suddenly SAM opens the passanger door and DEAN is startled by it. SAM sits in, looking over at his brother.
SAM
Hey. Any luck at the county clerk's office?
DEAN
I'm not sure I'd call it luck.
He hands over the papers to SAM.
DEAN
Frank's wife, Jessie, was a manic-depressive. She went off her meds back in '88 and vanished.
We get a shot of the printout which is an article about JESSIE being found.
DEAN
They found her two weeks later, three towns over, strung up in her motel room; suicide.
SAM
Any chance Frank helped her along to the other side?
DEAN
No, Frank was working the swing shift when she disappeared. Airtight alibi.
DEAN starts the car.
EXT. STREET
The boys are driving down the street.
INT. IMPALA
DEAN
How was Frank's pad?
SAM shakes his head.
SAM
Clean. Searched it top to bottom. No EMF, no hex bags, no sulfur.
DEAN
So probably no ghosts, no witches, no demons. 3 down and 97 to go.
SAM
Yeah.
SAM looks down at the speedometer.
SAM
Dude, you're going 20.
He looks over at DEAN.
DEAN
And?
SAM
That's the speed limit.
DEAN
What? Safety's a crime now?
EXT. HOTEL BLUEBIRD
DEAN passes by the hotel.
SAM (V.O)
Dude, where are you going? That was our hotel.
INT. IMPALA
DEAN
Sam, I'm not gonna make a left-hand turn into oncoming traffic. I'm not suicidal.
SAM looks at him, confused by this. DEAN is not acting himself. Suddenly we begin to hear a sound from the EMF meter.
DEAN
Did I just say that? That was kind of weird.
He looks over at SAM.
SAM
Do you hear something?
SAM takes out the EMF meter from his pocket and he moves it back and forth in front of himself, and everytime it reaches DEAN it goes of. DEAN looks freaked.
DEAN
Am I haunted?
He looks over at SAM, frantic.
DEAN
Am I haunted?!
EXT. STREET - DAY
SAM walks along the sidewalk, donuts in hand and on the phone with BOBBY.
SAM
Yeah. Alright Bobby, keep looking.
SAM clears his throat and we hear "Eye of the Tiger" in the background. SAM hears it too and stops, looking in the camera's direction. In a wider shot, we see it's the IMPALA he's looking over at, and it is the source of the music as well. SAM stands still for a few moments and then pockets the phone and walks over. As he comes up behind and walks along the car, he bends down and looks into the driversseat where DEAN is lying down on his back and playing along to the music with 'airdrums'. SAM taps the car on the ceiling, startling DEAN (he even makes a little startled sound), and he looks up. He tries to sit up and kills the music. He then gets out the car.
DEAN
Dude. Look at this.
He holds out hir right arm and we see three scratchmarks on it, resembling the ones that was on FRANK's body earlier, only not as many or as deep. SAM looks at it for a moment.
SAM
I just talked to Bobby.
DEAN
And?
SAM hands DEAN the box of donuts.
SAM
Um, well, you're not gonna like it.
DEAN only smells the outside of the box and then tosses it in the front seat of the car, not even taking one out to munch on. SAM interrups himself when DEAN does this, and he looks into the car at the box, while DEAN just puts his hands on his hips, waiting for SAM to go on.
DEAN
What?
SAM looks at him, and makes a "huh" face and then goes on.
SAM
It's ghost sickness.
DEAN
Ghost sickness?
SAM
Yeah.
DEAN
Oh, God, no.
SAM
Yeah.
DEAN
I don't even know what that is.
SAM
Okay. Some cultures believe that certain spirits can infect the living with a disease, which is why they stopped displaying bodies in houses and started taking them off to funeral homes.
DEAN
Okay, get to the good stuff.
SAM
Symptoms are you get anxious-
DEAN
Yeah.
SAM
-and scared, then really scared, then your heart gives out. Sound familiar?
DEAN
Yeah but, Sam, we haven't seen a ghost in weeks.
SAM
Well, I doubt you caught it from a ghost. Look, once a spirit infects that first person, ghost sickness can spread like any sickness through a-a cough, a handshake, whatever. It's like the flu. Now, Frank O'Brien was the first to die, which means he was probably the first infected. Patient zero.
DEAN
Our very own outbreak monkey.
SAM
Right, get this.
INT. BAR - FLASHBACK
SAM
Frank was in Maumee over the weekend.
We see three guys, one is FRANK, sitting by a table, eating nachos, having fun.
SAM
Softball tournament
SAM
Which is where he must have infected the other two victims.
They eat the nachos, and FRANK scratches himself.
DEAN
Were they Gamecocks?
SAM
Cornjerkers.
EXT. STREET
DEAN
So, ghosts infected Frank, he passed it on to the other guys, and I got it from his corpse?
SAM
Right.
DEAN
So now what? I have 48 hours before I go insane and my heart stops?
SAM
More like 24.
DEAN
Super.
SAM
Yeah.
DEAN
Well, why me? Why not you? I mean, you got hit with the spleen juice.
He motions his hand to his face.
SAM
Yeah, um... You see, Bobby and I have a theory about that too. Turns out all three victims shared a certain, uh, personality type. Frank was a bully. The other two victims; one was a vice principal, the other was a bouncer.
DEAN doesn't connect.
DEAN
Okay.
SAM
Basically, they were all dicks.
DEAN raises his eyebrows at that.
DEAN
So you're saying I'm a dick?
SAM
No, no, no. It's not just that. All three victims used fear as a weapon, and now this disease is just returning the favor.
DEAN
I don't scare people.
SAM
Dean, all we do is scare people.
DEAN
Okay, well, then you're a dick too.
SAM
Apparently I'm not.
DEAN
Whatever. How do we stop it?
SAM
We gank the ghost that started all this. We do that, the disease should clear up.
DEAN
You thinking Frank's wife?
SAM shrugs.
SAM
Who knows why she killed herself, you know? Hey, what are you doing waiting out here, anyway.
DEAN looks away and then looks up at the hotel and then back at SAM.
DEAN
Our room's on the fourth floor.
SAM looks up, and then shakes his head a little at DEAN, not gripping the point.
DEAN
It's... it's high.
SAM scoffs.
SAM
I'll see if I can move us down to the first.
DEAN is relieved by that.
DEAN
Thanks.
SAM
Sure.
SAM walks away and DEAN looks around and then sits into the IMPALA. He picks up the box of donuts and opens it, but quickly closes it again with a disgusted look on his face.
INT. MOTELROOM
DEAN is sitting by the table, a book for research between his hands. He's focused completely on the clock above him on the wall, that is ticking away very loudly. We hear the ticking becoming in sync with the distant sound of a heartbeat. DEAN looks very unsettled and blinks a few times, and looks down on the book, trying to focus on his research. We continue to hear the hearbeat together with the clock's ticking. DEAN turns a page and there's illustrations of people with ghost sickness. One is spewing blood and the other's chest is rupturing. The camera pans over some of the text -
"Ghost Sickness are affected by hallucinations"
"...and delirium and eventually a horrible death."
DEAN begins to cough and the camera pans over the images. It then pans down on the text we just saw up close and just after "delirium", words in bold and much larger font says "You're dying..." and then the sentence continues on as usual. DEAN blinks a few times. We get another shot of the text and among it we see the words "Again" and "Loser." written the same way as the other two words. DEAN looks freaked now. We get a shot of the book and it's now partly unfocused and flicking in zoom a little. DEAN closes his eyes and rubs them with his hand and then looks again. The words "You Gonna cry?" is now written in the book. DEAN's eyes widens and we see the words "baby gonna cry?". DEAN grunts, closes his eyes for a moment and lets go of the book. We hear the clock ticking very loudly now and he looks up at it. We get a closeup on it, and then the screen goes black and we hear a crash.
CUT TO: LATER
SAM comes in and the camera focuses on his feet as he does. We pan out and see the clock from the wall lying on the floor in front of him, crushes and broken into pieces. SAM stops just in front of it, looking down at it and then over at the wall where it used to hang. He looks over at DEAN, who's on the couch, drinking a beer. He closes the door.
SAM
Everything alright?
DEAN
Oh, yeah.
DEAN smiles.
DEAN
Just peachy.
SAM puts down the bags he had in his hands on the table next to the door, same table DEAN was sitting by before.
DEAN
Find anything?
SAM
Yeah.
DEAN starts scratching his arm where we saw earlier he had the three scratchmarks. As SAM talks, he walks over at sits down in the chair next to the couch.
SAM
Jessie O'Brien's body was cremated, so I'm pretty sure she's not our ghost.
SAM puts up his feet on the coffee table, next to DEAN's. DEAN continues to scratch his arm and SAM notices this.
SAM
Hey.
He kicks DEAN's feet to get his attention, which is currently focused on his arm. DEAN looks over at him
SAM
Quit picking at that.
DEAN stops scratching, but he doesn't look all that happy.
SAM
How you feeling?
DEAN
Awesome.
He gives SAM a smile, which obviously isn't a smile, smile.
DEAN
It's nice to have my head on the chopping block again. I almost forgot what that feels like.
SAM
Yeah.
DEAN coughs a little.
DEAN
It's feaking delightful.
He takes another swig of his beer.
SAM
We'll keep looking.
DEAN coughs again, this time it seems like he's chocking on something. He leans forward and SAM gets worried.
SAM
You okay?
He puts down the beer on the coffeetable, but doesn't stop coughing.
SAM
Hey!
DEAN can't breathe, grasping for air, like he's choking. He gets off the couch.
SAM
Dean.
SAM gets up and follows him, worried. DEAN goes over to the sink and coughs over it like he's going to throw up or choke. Suddenly something comes out of his mouth, something heavy as it hits the sink with a clank. DEAN immedietly stops coughing and stands up, looking down in the sink at what he just coughed up. SAM is next to him, doing the same. As DEAN reaches into the sink we get a shot of what he coughed up; a woodchip. He pours some water on it to clean it up.
DEAN
What the...?
DEAN holds it up and they both look at it.
SAM
We've been completely ignoring the biggest clue we have; you.
SAM looks up at DEAN who turns around and leans against the sink with the woodchip in his hand, a pout on his lips.
DEAN
I don't want to be a clue.
SAM
The abrasions, this; the-the disease, it's trying to tell us something.
DEAN
Tell us what? Woodchips?
DEAN turns to SAM, the woodchip still in his hand.
SAM smiles at him.
SAM
Exactly.
EXT. LUMBER MILL - DAY
The boys drive through the area and pulls up by one of the buildings. The place has been closed for years, as can be seen pretty much on the entire place. DEAN shuts off the engine and the boys get out. DEAN is looking a bit worried.
DEAN
I'm not going in there.
He looks over at SAM across the top of the car. SAM looks tired with this reaction and leans on the car, facing DEAN.
SAM
I need backup, and you're all I've got.
DEAN seems like he wants to say something but doesn't, he just looks a bit afraid and worried. SAM walks over to the trunk.
SAM
You're going in, Dean.
DEAN leans into the car and pulls out a bottle of whiskey. He takes a deep swig of it, trying to find some confidence like a regular Joe would the same way, and then closes the door to the drivers side and walks over to SAM by the trunk.
DEAN
Let's do this.
DEAN leans down and puts the keys in the trunk's lock, and then he looks around.
DEAN
It's a little spooky, isn't it?
He looks up at SAM who just ignores him, annoyed. He opens the trunk and SAM bends down and begins to collect weapons they'll need. He pulls out DEAN's pearl-handled handgun and while continuing to look around the trunk, he holds the gun out to DEAN. DEAN just looks down on it.
DEAN
Oh, I'm not carrying that.
SAM stands up, looking at him.
DEAN
It could go off.
SAM looks at him, throws a glance at the gun and then looks at DEAN, annoyed with that resoning. DEAN reaches into the trunk and takes out a flashlight. He stands up again, holds it to his chest with both hands.
DEAN
I'll man the flashlight.
SAM gives a little smiles, looking like he's ready to hit DEAN because of stupidity.
SAM
You do that.
DEAN continues to hold the flashlight to his chest and smiles at SAM. He turns around and looks at the building they're going into.
INT. LUMBER MILL – DAY
The place looks abandoned and probably hasn't been used for years. Sam walks down a hall, shotgun aimed at the ready, closely followed by Dean who's shining the way with his flashlight. As they walk towards the camera we hear the EMF reader begin to make noise. Sam takes it out of his pocket. They both look at it, each other and after a few moments Dean looks a little guilty and Sam annoyed.
DEAN
EMF's not gonna work with me around, is it?
He smiles a little uncertainly. Sam scoffs.
SAM
You don't say.
He pockets the EMF again and then takes his shotgun with both hands again.
SAM
Come on.
They only take a step or two and then SAM notices something on the floor.
SAM
What?
He holds out his hand to stop DEAN, who's looking to the side and gets frightened by SAM's sudden motion. SAM shyshes him. The camera cuts to the floor and we see an old ragg lying just before SAM's feet. He moves it and picks up something from beneath it. Both he and DEAN is kneeling and as we the camera cuts to the side of the boys we see SAM inspecting the item which turns out to be a weddingband.
SAM
(reading inscription)
”To Frank - Love Jessie”
Frank O'Brien's ring.
DEAN
What the hell was Frank doing here?
SAM
No idea.
INT. HALLWAY
The boys walk down the hallway towards the camera, same positions as when they entered the building; SAM first, closely followed by DEAN. They pass a few rooms and after a glance they move on. Then we suddenly hear a sound off camera, both DEAN and SAM react.
INT. LOCKER ROOM
They enter an old locker room, where the sound is originating from. It's like a banging on metal, but not constant. They close in on the locker the sound is coming from, SAM is ready with his weapon and DEAN is shining his light on the locker. He shines it at SAM for a moment with an almost terrified look on his face. When the sound is heard again, they exchange glances and then DEAN shines on the locker again and SAM gets closer. He puts his hand on the handle and then mouths to DEAN:
SAM
On three.
DEAN nods.
SAM
(whispering)
One. Two. Three.
SAM flings the lockerdoor open, we see a cat sitting on the topshelf and it mjaus and then DEAN begins to scream very loudly. The cat jumps out of the locker and SAM turns around and looks at DEAN like ”WTF?”. When DEAN stops screaming, about the time his air runs out, he bends over and takes loud deep breaths. SAM raises his eyebrows at him. DEAN stands up and looks at SAM with a way too big smile.
DEAN
That was scary.
SAM doesn't say anything, he just leaves the room. DEAN turns around as he leaves and again looks afraid.
DEAN
(small voice)
Wait.
He rushes after SAM.
INT. ROOM
SAM, with DEAN on his tail, walks slowly into another room. We see a lot of paper on the floor, and a small bookcase. SAM lowers his shotgun and then walks more relaxed into the room. DEAN, not so much. SAM walks over to a desk and looks at a few papers, DEAN stops a few steps behind and begins to look around the room in a slow circle, shining the light on the desks and benches lined up at the walls around the room. DEAN notices something on one of the desks. As he walks over to it, SAM picks up a security pass card for the Lumber Mill, issued to a LUTHER GARLAND, his position was ”general labor” and it expires March 12/89.
SAM
Luther Garland.
DEAN is now by his desk and we see a shot of it as he moves a piece of paper to show a drawing of a woman.
DEAN
Hey, this is uh...
He unfolds a print out of FRANK O'BRIEN's wife's article.
DEAN
(cont'd)
..this is Frank's wife.
SAM pockets the security pass card as he looks over.
SAM
Plot thickens.
He walks over to DEAN.
DEAN
Yeah but, into what?
DEAN rips the drawing free from the desk, and as he does we get a shot of the machinery starting up. DEAN makes a startled noise and turns around, aiming his light at what's going on. We get another shot of machinery starting. While SAM looks around, DEAN slowly pans the flashlight from right to left. SAM turns back towards the desk as DEAN gets to the left corner with the light. We get a shot from his angle as he turns towards SAM with the light. As he passes the corner, we see someone standing there, his back towards the camera. We continue to move as SAM comes into frame, blurry. The camera cuts back to DEAN who now looks worried and backpedals to the man in the corner and then he freezes. He begins to look more and more scared as he continues to shine his light on the man in the corner. Finally SAM notices DEAN and turns around to see what has gotten his attention. He quickly raises the shotgun at the man, who has yet to turn around. SAM takes a few steps forward.
SAM
Hey!
DEAN can't control his facial features, twitching with SAM's exclamation. The camera cuts to SAM as he turns his head to look back at DEAN and he quickly looks puzzled and then looks towards the doors. The puzzlement disappears and then the camera cuts to show DEAN running away, looking back once without stopping. SAM shakes his head and sighs. The man in the background turns around. He's got cuts over his bald head, face and hands and he's dressed in a workers uniform. He doesn't look very happy. He charges SAM but doesn't get very far as SAM quickly raises his gun again and shoots a round of salt at the man. He disappears.
EXT. LUMBER MILL – DAY
DEAN is cowering on the ground by the IMPALA's trunk, drinking deeply from the whiskey bottle. As SAM comes running out, DEAN empties the last drop and looks over at SAM. He stops by DEAN and holds up the ident card he found inside.
SAM
Guess we got the right place.
The camera pans down to DEAN who's breathing quick, shallow breaths and looking anything but relieved.
INT. POLICE STATION – DAY
LINUS walks over with a folder in his hand to the reception desk where SAM is standing, dressed as a federal agent. He hands the file to SAM.
LINUS
This is the Garland file.
SAM
Thanks.
SAM opens the folder and looks through it. LINUS looks up at sees DEAN, who's standing by the chairs he and SAM sat in the first time they were there. He's staring into space, scratching his arm, fidgeting. LINUS looks at SAM and then back at DEAN. DEAN in turn slowly looks over at a woman sitting in another chair.
LINUS
Is he... drunk?
SAM turns around and looks at his brother. DEAN looks up at SAM and we can see that he isn't looking all that well, a sick look beginning to seep into his features, but also drunkeness. He winks at SAM and gives him the thumbs up. SAM turns back to LINUS and answers him stiffly.
SAM
No.
LINUS looks at DEAN for another beat and then turns his attention to the folder as SAM begins to speak about the case.
SAM
(cont'd)
Deputy, according to this Luther Garland's cause of death was physical trauma. What does that mean?
LINUS
The guy died 20 years ago – before my time. Sorry.
SAM
Then can we talk to the sheriff?
LINUS throws a look over at the SHERIFF's office.
LINUS
Um, he's out sick today.
We see DEAN in the background beginning to scratch his arm again.
SAM
Well, if you see him, will you have him call us?
DEAN notices something on his wrist and stops scratching. He raises his arm to take a closer look at his wrist, all the while looking pretty drunk.
SAM
(cont'd)
We're staying at the Blue Bird.
SAM holds up the folder.
SAM
(cont'd)
Mind if I take this?
SAM walks out. DEAN stops examining his hand and looks over at SAM walking away and then looks up at LINUS.
DEAN
Know what?
After a beat he points at LINUS and gives a drunken smile.
DEAN
(cont'd)
You're awesome.
LINUS does a half-hearted laugh, not sure about DEAN and his drunkeness, but smiles.
LINUS
Thanks.
DEAN motions with his head basically ”Sure” and continues to smile.
LINUS
(cont'd)
Um.. Y-you too, I guess.
DEAN starts wiping his right hand (same hand he was examining) on his leg and then SAM shows up and grabs him by his neck and hauls him off. After a beat we hear the SHERIFF on the intercom.
SHERIFF
Who was that?
LINUS
It uh... Those FBI guys.
SHERIFF
What did they want?
LINUS
A file – Luther Garland's.
The SHERIFF doesn't respond and after a beat:
LINUS
Sheriff?
INT. SHERIFF'S OFFICE
We see the SHERIFF scratching his arm with a wire wool scouring pad causing his arm to bleed. We also hear his heart beating loudly as he scratches on fiercly. He then moves over to his gun lying on the desk infront of him and begins to load bullets into it, hands smeared with his own blood. Suddenly we hear his voice, but he's not the one speaking.
VOICE
They know.
He's finished loading the gun and snaps it shut. He begins to look around.
VOICE
They know.
He stands up and aims his gun at the wall with all his trophies. We notice the camera acting up the same way it did when DEAN began to hallucinate the words in the book about ghost sickness. Suddenly we see his reflection in one of the trophies, looking back at the SHERIFF, talking to him.
VOICE
They know what you did and they're gonna make you pay.
The VOICE begins to laugh.
INT. PEACEFUL PINES – HALLWAY
We see a sign that says ”PEACEFUL PINES – assistant living” on the wall of the hallway. SAM and DEAN come around a corner and meet an old lady with her saline-drip.DEAN gets scared and stumbles into the wall and groans as the lady passes them. SAM stands by DEAN, holding him by the arm. They start walking down the hallway.
DEAN
This isn't gonna work. Well, come on, these badges are fake. What if we get busted? We could go to jail.
SAM takes a few quick steps and stops DEAN by standing infront of him.
SAM
Dean, shhh. Calm down. Deep breath, okay?
He demonstrates by taking an exagurated deep breath. DEAN follows, staring and SAM with big eyes and looking anything but calm. They breathe out.
SAM
There. You feel better?
DEAN shakes his head ”no”. He's looking a bit sweaty.
SAM
(cont'd)
Just come on.
They start walking down the hallway again, back to the camera. We see DEAN somewhat hunched over. SAM looks over at him.
SAM
Don't scratch.
DEAN straightens up. As an orderly passes them in the hall, DEAN briefly grabs SAM's arm, who just looks at him annoyed.
INT. SITTING AREA
DEAN and SAM approach a man sitting by one of the tables, his eyes closed and a mug infront of him. As SAM clears his throat the man opens his eyes.
SAM
Mr. Garland.
The boys round the table to stand infront of MR. GARLAND.
SAM
(cont'd)
Hi. Um.. I'm agent Tyler. This is agent Perry. FBI.
DEAN gives a small wave.
SAM
(cont'd)
We'd like to ask you a few questions about your brother Luther.
MR. GARLAND
Let me see some ID.
DEAN immidietly begins to look nervous.
SAM
Certainly.
DEAN looks up at SAM who takes out his own ID and motions it quickly at DEAN, indicating he take out his as well. They unfold them and hand them over to MR. GARLAND. DEAN continues to look somewhat nervous, sucking in both his lips. MR. GARLAND studies the IDs. After looking at DEAN's he glances up at him.
DEAN
Those are real.
He gives a halfsmile and a nod to bring home the point. MR. GARLAND just stares at him.
DEAN
(cont'd)
Obviously.
SAM clears his throat making DEAN look up at him again. We get a look at the IDs as DEAN continues to put his foot in his mouth.
DEAN
(cont'd)
I mean, who would pretend to be an FBI agent, huh? That's just nutty.
He smiles big and nervously. SAM kicks him hard. The smile goes away, replaced by a little pain. You can almost see tears glistening in those eyes. SAM gives a quick smile, the way he does when he's very annoyed, but he doesn't take his eyes of MR. GARLAND, who's still studying the IDs. Finally he folds them both closed and hands them back to the boys.
MR. GARLAND
What do you want to know?
SAM
Uh, well..
He holds up the folder he was looking through at the police station. He sits down across from MR. GARLAND.
SAM
(cont'd)
According to this, your brother Luther died of physical trauma.
He opens the folder and MR. GARLAND looks away and scoffs.
SAM
You don't agree?
MR. GARLAND
No, I don't.
DEAN sits down next to SAM.
SAM
Well, then, what would you call it?
MR. GARLAND
Don't matter what an old man thinks.
He's very low-key and seems like he's given up on the whole things.
SAM
Mr. Garland. We're just trying to get the truth on your brother. Please.
He's gotten MR. GARLAND's attention with that statement. MR. GARLAND leans forward and takes the security pass of LUTHER, that SAM found at the MILL, from the folder and looks at it as he speaks.
MR. GARLAND
Everybody was scared of Luther. They called him a monster.
FLASHBACK – INT. LUMBER MILL – DAY
The camera follows LUTHER from behind as he walks past a worker who looks up at him.
MR. GARLAND (V.O)
(cont'd)
He was too big, too mean-looking.
Another worker passes LUTHER, who flinches away from him, somewhat frightened.
MR. GARLAND (V.O)
(cont'd)
Just too different.
LUTHER looks up as a woman walks past him, a somewhat disgusted look on her face.
CUT TO:
LUTHER picking up a little kitten from a box. He brings it up to his chest as it begins to spinn comfortably in his hands.
MR. GARLAND (V.O)
(cont'd)
Didn't matter he was the kindest man I ever knew. Didn't matter he'd never hurt noone.
PRESENT DAY - INT. SITTING AREA
MR. GARLAND suck in a need breath, tears on his voice.
MR. GARLAND
A lot of people failed Luther. I was one of them. I was a widower with three young'uns and I told myself there was nothing I could do.
SAM
Mr. Garland, um..
He unfolds the drawing they found at the mill and shows it to MR. GARLAND.
SAM
(cont'd)
Do you recognize this woman?
MR. GARLAND
It's Jessie O'Brien. Her man, Frank, killed Luther.
DEAN raises his eyebrows, suprised and then looks over at SAM.
SAM
How do you know that?
MR. GARLAND
Everybody knows. They just don't talk about it.
FLASHBACK – INT. LUMBER MILL
We see JESSIE sitting at her desk, mulling over a paper on a clipboard, pencil in her hand.
MR. GARLAND (V.O)
Jessie was a receptionist at the mill.
She drops the pencil and we see LUTHER on his knee next to her, picking it up and giving it back to her. She smiles at him and we can see she says ”Thank you”.
MR. GARLAND (V.O)
(cont'd)
She was always real nice to Luther and he had a crush on her.
LUTHER stands up, smiling.
PRESENT DAY - INT. SITTING AREA
MR. GARLAND
(cont'd)
But Frank didn't like it. And when Jessie went missing.. Frank was sure that Luther had done something to her. Turns out the old gal killed herself but Frank didn't know that.
FLASHBACK – EXT. LUMBER MILL – NIGHT
We see a pickup driving up outside the mill.
FLASHBACK – INT. LUMBER MILL – NIGHT
Frank comes through the door to the same room DEAN and SAM saw LUTHER the first time, shotgun in hand. LUTHER, sitting at his desk, turns around and sees FRANK who doesn't look like he really wants to be there. LUTHER turns back to the wall the desk is facing and we see it's covered in drawings, a lot of them featuring JESSIE. When FRANK sees this, he looks angry and cocks the weapon. LUTHER flinches at the sound, looking like a scared boy.
FLASHBACK – EXT. LUMBER MILL – NIGHT
LUTHER comes out, FRANK right behind him, his hands chained together. FRANK pushes him once and then hits him in the back with his weapon so LUTHER falls to the ground. He hits him again at the side of his head with the butt of the shotgun. LUTHER rolls over on the ground, blood streaking his chin and lips. We now see that he's chained by his neck which LUTHER notices after a beat and then the sound of a cardoor slamming is heard. LUTHER tries to get free, desperation on his face, but it's no use. We hear the engine start and then we get a shot of the backtire as the car starts with a screetch, a chain trailing behind it. We see how the chain gets stretched more and more and then we hear how it's stretched to LUTHER's neck.
PRESENT DAY - INT. SITTING AREA
MR. GARLAND
They found Luther with a chain wrapped around his neck. He was dragged up and down the stretch outside that plant 'til he was past dead.
DEAN
O'Brien was never arrested?
MR. GARLAND
I screamed to every cop in town, they didn't want to look into Frank. He was a pillar of the community, my brother was just the town freak.
SAM
You must've hated Frank O'Brien.
MR. GARLAND
I did for a long time, but... Life's too short for hate, son. And Frank wasn't thinking straight. His wife had vanished. He was terrified. A damn shame he had to put Luther through the same, but.. that's fear. It spreads and spreads.
EXT. PEACEFUL PINES – NIGHT
DEAN and SAM comes out the door and walks down the few steps to get to the IMPALA parked just outside.
DEAN
Now I know what these are – road rash. And I'm guessing Luther swallowed some woodchips when he was being dragged down that road.
SAM is loosening his tie and unbuttoning the top button of his shirt. They reach the car, DEAN walks aroudn the front of it to the drivers side.
SAM
Makes sense.
They stop outside the doors and SAM leans on the top of the car, placing the folder on it.
SAM
(cont'd)
You're experiencing his death in slow motion.
DEAN is looking rather freaked.
DEAN
Yeah, well, not slow enough, huh? I say we burn some bones and get me healthy.
He looks down at the keys in his hand, picking out the right one.
SAM
Dean, it won't be that easy.
DEAN
No, no. It'll be that easy. Why wouldn't it be that easy?
He leans on the car.
SAM
Luther was road-hauled. His body was ripped to pieces. He was probably scattered all over that road. There's no way we're gonna find all the remains.
DEAN looks for a second like he's going to faint when taking this in.
DEAN
You're kidding me.
SAM
Look, we'll just have to figure something else out.
DEAN starts for the front of the car.
DEAN
You know what? Screw this.
SAM follows him on his own side of the car.
SAM
Whoa, whoa, whoa, Dean. Come on.
DEAN stops and faces SAM.
DEAN
No, I mean, come on, Sam. What are we doing?
SAM looks at DEAN with an ”this is obvious” look.
SAM
We're hunting a ghost.
DEAN is getting worked up.
DEAN
A ghost; exactly. Who does that?
SAM
Us.
DEAN
Us. Right. And that, Sam, that is exactly why our lives suck. I mean, come on. We hunt monsters. What the hell?! I mean, normal people, they see a monster and they run. But not us. No, no, no. We- we search out things that want to kill us. Yeah? Huh? Or eat us! You know who does that? Crazy people! We.. are insane!
SAM is just looking at him, his hands on the hood of car, eyebrows raised. DEAN begins to pace now.
DEAN
(cont'd)
You know. And then there's the-the-the bad diner food, and then the-the skeevy motel rooms and then the truck-stop waitress with the bizarre rash. I mean, who wants this life, Sam? Huh?
He stops by the hood of the car again, arms out.
DEAN
(cont'd)
Seriously? I mean, do you actually like being stuck in a car with me eight hours a day, every single day? I don't think so!
SAM makes a little face and looks over at DEAN.
DEAN
(cont'd)
I mean, I drive too fast and I listen to the same five albums over and over and over again, an-an-and I sing a-long. I'm annoying. I know that. And you... You're gassy! You eat half a burrito and you get toxic. I mean, you know what?
He looks up at SAM and then throws him the keys to the car. SAM catches them, surprised.
DEAN
You can forget it.
DEAN starts walking towards the back of the car.
SAM
Whoa, Dean. Where are you going?
DEAN backpedals and points at SAM.
DEAN
Stay away from me, Sam, okay? 'Cause I am done with it. I'm done with the monsters an-an-an-and and the-the-
He's getting a ”WTF” face.
DEAN
(cont'd)
-hellhounds, and the ghost sickness and the damn apocalypse.
He walks away again, this time not stopping.
DEAN
(cont'd)
I'm out. I'm done. I quit.
SAM breathes out a somewhat annoyed sigh.
CUT TO:
DEAN walking down the road. The camera pans from his feet and up to his face as he loosens his tie and unbuttons the top buttons of his shirt. He's not looking well. Suddenly we hear the patter of light paws on the asphalt. DEAN freezes. A dog begins to growl at him. DEAN reluctantly and slowly turns around. On the ground sits a tiny little dog with a pink bow in it. It's the same dog from the opening of the episode, connecting us back to where everything started in the episode. The camera zooms in on DEAN as he stares at the dog, afraid.
INT. MOTEL ROOM – NIGHT
DEAN is sitting on the bed, somewhat breathless. When SAM comes through the door, he looks up. SAM walks over to him, annoyed.
SAM
I looked everywhere for you, Dean. How the hell did you get here?
DEAN is still a little breathless.
DEAN
Ran.
SAM breathes out, annoyance leaving him. He walks over and sits down on his own bed. DEAN looks over at him.
DEAN
What do we do now? I got less than four hours on the clock.
SAM sighs.
DEAN
I'm gonna die, Sammy.
SAM
Yeah, you are.
DEAN's eyebrows knits together, puzzled, at that. SAM isn't sounding very worried.
SAM
(cont'd)
You're going back.
DEAN
Back?
SAM
Downstairs, Dean. Hell.
We start to hear the beating of DEAN's heart.
SAM
(cont'd)
It's about damn time, too. Truth is...
DEAN, who's looked away while taking this in, looks over at SAM. We see him through DEAN's eyes and the camera is acting up again, like the last time DEAN hallucinated. SAM's voice changes, deepens and his eyes suddenly flicker to yellow, like the YED.
DEMON!SAM
(cont'd)
You've been a real pain in my ass.
DEAN starts at that and gets up off the bed. He hasn't fully gotten to his feet when DEMON!SAM turns his face away and lifts his hand, flinging DEAN to the wall and pinning him.
DEAN
No! You get out of my brother, you evil son of a bitch!
DEMON!SAM begins to laugh and gets off the bed.
DEMON!SAM
Noone's possessing me, Dean.
As DEMON!SAM turns to DEAN, his eyes are back to normal. He begins to walk towards DEAN.
DEMON!SAM
This is what I'm going to become. This is what I want to become.
He's reached DEAN now, standing face to face. His smile is gone. He places his hand on DEAN's shoulder, who's shaking his head ”no”.
DEMON!SAM
(cont'd)
There's nothing you can do about it.
His eyes flicks back to yellow as DEAN looks up at him. Suddenly he grabs DEAN by the throat and begins to choke him. DEAN is gasping for air while DEMON!SAM watches and continues to squeeze his throat.
SAM
Hey, hey, hey, hey, Dean!
We now see the reality of the scene. DEAN is standing against the wall and SAM has his hand high up on DEAN's chest, almost shoulder, trying to bring him out of the hallucination. DEAN is still gasping for air. He lightly shoves DEAN once into the wall to snap him out of it.
SAM
(cont'd)
Hey, hey, Dean. Dean.
DEAN begins to snap out of it and looks up at SAM, who looks worried. His breathing starts to even out. SAM taps him once with the hand on his shoulder and DEAN shakes his head a little like ”I'm ok”. SAM walks away and we see DEAN looking up at SAM's retreating form, not completely buying that it was an hallucination.
EXT. UNIDENTIFIED LOCATION – DAY
SAM is leaning on the IMPALA as we hear another car pulling up behind him. He turns around and we see BOBBY parking behind the IMPALA. He gets out and walks over to SAM.
BOBBY
Howdy, Sam.
SAM
Hey, Bobby. Thanks for coming up so quick.
BOBBY
Where's Dean?
BOBBY's reached SAM, who sits down on the hood of the IMPALA.
SAM
Uh... Home sick.
INT. MOTEL ROOM – DAY
DEAN is sitting on the couch, watching a childrens westernlike program on tv, scratching his arm and looking somewhat dazed. He flinches as the horse on the program gets a rope around it's neck and is pulled out from the saloon it was sitting in and dragged down the street.
DEAN
Oh, this isn't helping.
EXT. UNIDENTIFIED LOCATION – DAY
BOBBY
So, have his hallucinations started yet?
SAM
Yeah, a few hours ago.
BOBBY
How we doin' on time?
SAM
We saw the coroner about 8am monday morning, so, uh..
He checks his watch.
SAM
(cont'd)
Just under two hours. What about you? You find anything?
BOBBY takes out a book from an innerpocket of his jacket and hands it to SAM.
BOBBY
This, uh, encyclopedia of spirits dates to the edo period.
SAM flips through it and stops on a page. There's an old Japanese-style drawing and Japanese text.
SAM
You can read japanese?
BOBBY responds in japanese.
SAM
Guess so, show-off.
He continues to flip through the book.
BOBBY
Anyway, this book lists a kind of ghost that could be our guy. It, uh, infects people with fear. It's called a Buru Buru.
SAM
It say how to kill it?
BOBBY
Same as usual; burn the remains.
SAM
Wonderful. Uh.. is there a plan ”B”?
BOBBY
Well, the Buru Buru is born of fear. Hell, it is fear. And the lore says we can kill it with fear.
SAM
So we have to scare a ghost to death?
BOBBY
Pretty much.
SAM takes that in for a moment.
SAM
How the hell we gonna do that?
INT. MOTEL ROOM – DAY
DEAN is still sitting by the tv when his phone rings. It's SAM.
DEAN
Hey.
SAM
Hey.
EXT. UNIDENTIFIED LOCATION – DAY
We see SAM on the phone with DEAN.
SAM
So uh, just ride out the trip, okay?
INT. MOTEL ROOM – DAY
SAM
(cont'd)
You're- you're gonna be fine. We got a plan.
We hear church music coming from the TV and DEAN makes a face at it and turns it off.
DEAN
What is it?
SAM
Just, uh, a good plan, all right? Hang in there.
EXT. LUMBER MILL – DAY
SAM hangs up the phone and turns around to BOBBY who's standing by the open trunk of the IMPALA, shotgun in hand.
BOBBY
This is a terrible plan.
SAM
Yeah, tell me about it.
BOBBY loads the shotgun.
BOBBY
I know I said, ”scare the ghost to death”, but this?
SAM
Hey, you got a better idea, I'm listening.
SAM walks away and BOBBY shuts the trunk.
INT. LUMBER MILL – DAY
SAM comes walking in slowly, shotgun in relaxed hand, looking around. Suddenly we see a hand in the foreground, bloody, slam the palm into the glas of the window we're looking out of. The camera moves and we see LUTHER reflected in the glass, watching SAM.
INT. MOTEL ROOM
DEAN touches his forehead and eyes tiredly. Suddenly we hear the howling of Hellhounds far away and DEAN quickly looks up. It goes quiet for a moment and DEAN looks around the room, suddenly we hear the bark and growling of Hellhounds much closer. DEAN looks in the direction it's coming from. They seem to be all around the room now, and then they begin to bang on the door, trying to get in. The door is rattling from all the force and DEAN gets off the chair, turns the back of it towards the door and hides behind it. The door bursts open, and we see everything going in and out of focus, like DEAN's other hallucinations. In the doorway stands the SHERIFF. DEAN looks up from the chair when he sees him and we hear the pound of a heart. The SHERIFF walks into the room, eyes on DEAN who's getting up now.
DEAN
Sheriff? What are you doing?
He looks down and we see that the SHERIFF is holding the gun he was loading in his office, in his right hand. DEAN looks up at the SHERIFF again.
SHERIFF
Why are you looking into Luther Garland's death?
DEAN
Wha-
He notices blood on the sleeve of the SHERIFF's shirt. He's bleeding in the same place DEAN has been scratching.
DEAN
(cont'd)
Hey, hey, you're- you're sick. You're sick. You're sick, all right? Just like-
He indicates the SHERIFF's arm and then his own.
DEAN
(cont'd)
Just like me, okay? You gotta relax.
The SHERIFF hits DEAN who turns with the blow and stumbles into a table by the window, clutching is head with his right hand.
SHERIFF
Frank O'Brien was my friend.
DEAN looks up at him.
SHERIFF
(cont'd)
So he made a mistake. So I didn't bust him. So what? And you're gonna bring me down over that?! No, sir.
He raises the gun at DEAN, who stares at it. He then hits it and both he and the SHERIFF look surprised by that. We hear it tumble to the floor and then the SHERIFF tackles DEAN into the wall. He holds his arm over DEAN's throat, who tries to push him away with his hand in his face. The SHERIFF hits him in the stomach twice and then once in his jaw. He grabs DEAN by the colars of his shirt and presses him into the wall. DEAN manages to get three hits into the side of the SHERIFF, but the SHERIFF isn't letting go. We hear the heart pounding and we see the SHERIFF through DEAN's eyes – his eyes are now demon black. DEAN finally manages to throw the SHERIFF off of him and he falls into the table by the couch. DEAN stops and looks at the SHERIFF, probably not wanting to have done that. The SHERIFF on his back becomes terrified of DEAN as he moves closer. He begins to have trouble breathing, touching his throat. We suddenly hear the VOICE again that he heard in the office.
VOICE
They know what you did.
He raises one hand against DEAN, who's just looking at him, taking in what's happening and moving slowly closer.
SHERIFF
Get away from me!
The heart pounding is accelerating in beats.
DEAN
Al, you got to calm down.
SHERIFF
Step back!
VOICE
They know...
DEAN is watching in horror as the SHERIFF isn't calming down, just working himself up more and more in terror. Suddenly the heartbeat stops and the SHERIFF goes limp. DEAN looks at him for a while longer and then looks outside, worried that someone's gonna see.
INT. LUMBER MILL
SAM comes through the door to the office we met LUTHER in the first time, shotgun at the ready. After a moment we hear BOBBY's voice via SAM's phone, revealing they're using their phones as walky talky.
BOBBY
Any luck?
SAM retrieves his phone and walks further into the room.
SAM
I don't know what's wrong, Bobby. Last time he came right at us. It's almost like he's uh... Like he's scared.
SAM puts down his shotgun on the ground.
BOBBY
So now what?
SAM
I guess I got to make him angry.
He walks over to one of the desks and picks up a drawing of JESSIE.
SAM
Hey, Luther!
He rips up the drawing. Immidietly the machinery at the mill start up. SAM finds another drawing and rips that up too, all the while keeping a look-out for LUTHER.
SAM
(cont'd)
Come on, Luther! Where the hell are you?
More machinery starts up. SAM pulls out more drawings and rips them up.
SAM
What are you waiting for?
He rips up one more drawing and then as the camera pans around him we see LUTHER standing behind him. SAM can feel him right away and slowly turns around and looks up at LUTHER, who's taller than SAM. He grabs SAM by his jacket.
INT. MOTEL ROOM
DEAN is sitting on one of the beds, scratching his arm. We see the SHERIFF on the floor in the foreground. DEAN has used one of the bed-covers to cover him, but his right arm is still showing. DEAN look over at the SHERIFF for a moment and then continues scratching. We get a shot of his arms and see both of them raw and covered in scratches. Suddenly we hear SAM's voice, repeating what he said in the last hallucination.
DEMON!SAM
You're going back. About damn time too.
We hear DEMON!SAM laugh and see the room through DEAN's eyes, showing he's again hallucinating, vision going in an out in zoom and blur. We hear the ticking of a clock. DEAN looks over at his duffel and then at his watch. The sound of barking Hellhounds can again be heard. DEAN stops scratching for a moment, grabbing his watch and as he notices something on the floor we begin to hear his heart beat. He picks up the item on the floor and it's revealed as a book. He examins it for a moment and then turns it around and we see it's the bible. He brings it to his lips, closes his eyes and clutches it tightly.
LILITH
Hi, Dean.
DEAN's eyes snap open. He slowly looks to the side and we see the little girl LILITH used as a body in ”NO REST FOR THE WICKED” sitting on the bed next to him. DEAN breathes out and doesn't look at her directly. She on the other hand is looking at him with a big smile. He turns back and holds on to the book, not wanting to believe she's there.
DEAN
(forcefull)
No. No.
LILITH
Yes. It's me, Lilith.
She grabs on to DEAN, hugging his shoulder.
LILITH
Oh, I missed you so much.
DEAN's features harden as he tries to ignore her and what she's doing.
LILITH
(cont'd)
It's time to go back now.
DEAN wrenches free and stands up. He takes a few steps away, and LILITH looks disappointed that he ended her hug.
DEAN
You- you are not real!
DEAN points at her with the bible but doesn't look at her, he's very specific about looking straight ahead. LILITH is beginning to look very unhappy.
LILITH
What's the matter, Dean? Don't you remember all the fun you had down there?
DEAN slowly looks down at her. LILITH stands up by the bed.
LILITH
(cont'd)
You do remember. 4 months is like 40 years in hell.
She folds her arms and walks towards him.
LILITH
(cont'd)
Like doggy years.
We see her through his eyes and again everything becomes blurry.
LILITH
(cont'd)
And you remember every second.
DEAN suddenly feels a pain in his chest and doubles over and falls to his knees. LILITH just watches him.
DEAN
You are not real.
LILITH grabs his head and brings his face up to look at her. Her eyes are now white.
LILITH
Doesn't matter. You're still gonna die. You're still gonna burn.
Her eyes reverts back to normal and she smiles at him arrogantly. She's let go of his face but he's still looking at her.
DEAN
Why me? Why'd I get infected.
She puts her hands on her hips.
LILITH
Silly goose. You know why, Dean. Listen to your heart.
DEAN
What?
LILITH
Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom.
DEAN flinches and falls to the floor again, turning over, clutching his chest and lying on his side supported on his left arm now with wide eyes.
INT. LUMBER MILL – DAY
SAM falls to the floor, and we hear LILITH replicating the beat of DEAN's heart.
LILITH (V.O)
Bo-Boom.
LUTHER walks over to SAM who quickly rolls over and spots his shotgun on the ground where he placed it earlier. He begins to frantically crawl towards it but LUTHER grabs him by his right leg and pulls him back. He then kicks him once, but SAM won't let this stop him and begins to crawl towards the shotgun again. LUTHER again grabs SAM by his right leg and pulls him back, and this time he grabs him by the jacket and then turns him over as well. SAM actually laughs a little here, which is cut short when LUTHER bends down and grabs him by the cuff of his jacket and pulls him up and slams him down again, once, twice, in time with DEAN's heartbeat and we hear LILITH with every slam.
LILITH (V.O)
Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom.
INT. MOTEL ROOM
LILITH is walking towards DEAN who's clutching his chest and staring up at her, as she continues to mimic his heartbeat.
LILITH
Bo-Boom.
With every beat, she now shakes her fists at her sides to emphasize the beats.
LILITH
Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom.
INT. LUMBER MILL
LUTHER slams SAM down again but this time he reaches above his head and we hear the sound of chains and then SAM throws it around LUTHER's neck and wraps it once around it. LUTHER looks a bit shocked by this turn of events. He begins to grab at the chain around his neck.
SAM
Bobby, punch it!
INT. IMPALA
We see BOBBY put the car in gear and then he slams the pedal.
EXT. LUMBER MILL
the IMPALA takes off and we see the chain wrapped around the fender at the back of the car. The chain is stretched and we see how it's been hidden beneath the dirt. We follow it to the door.
INT. LUMBER MILL
LUTHER falls backwards when the chain begins to pull at him and he is dragged out of the mill by his neck.
EXT. LUMBER MILL
LUTHER comes dragged out through the doors, and as they swing shut we see SAM getting up and watching him go.
LILITH (V.O)
Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom.
INT. MOTEL ROOM
LILITH has accelirated in beats and her voice is growing higher in pitch. We see her through DEAN's eyes as she goes in and out of focus and we hear DEAN's heartbeat above her voice.
LILITH
Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom.
EXT. LUMBER MILL
We see the IMPALA drive past the camera, LUTHER pulled behind. LILITH can be heard over the sound of the engine, now frantically mimicing DEAN's heart.
LILITH (V.O)
Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom. Boom.
Her voice fades out.
INT. IMPALA
BOBBY turns around and checks to see LUTHER still being dragged behind the car.
EXT. LUMBER MILL
LUTHER is still frantically grabbing at the chain as he continues to be dragged.
LILITH (V.O)
Bo-Boom.
INT. MOTEL ROOM
DEAN is gasping on the floor, eyes wide, cluthing his chest.
LILITH
Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom. Bo-Boom.
Suddenly his eyes go wide and his body limp.
EXT. LUMBER MILL
LUTHER disintegrates behind the car and finally it's only the chain itself being dragged behind the IMPALA. As BOBBY behind to slow, the machinery at the mill stops. The IMPALA comes to a stop.
INT. IMPALA
BOBBY throws a look behind him and then breathes easy, taking a sigh-like breath.
INT. MOTEL ROOM
DEAN is lying on the floor, limp, eyes staring straight ahead. Suddenly he begins to gasp for air and cough as it reaches his lungs. He looks around and notices, he's alone, no more LILITH. He looks down at his arms and checks them but the scratches is gone and his arms look fine. He relaxes on the floor, lying on his back.
EXT. UNKNOWN LOCATION – DAY
DEAN retrives two bottles of beer from the cooler in the IMPALA and hands one over to SAM. BOBBY is standing opposite the boys, leaning on his car, while they're leaning on the IMPALA.
DEAN
So you guys road-hauled a ghosts with a chain?
DEAN offer the other beer to BOBBY, who declines.
SAM
Iron chain, etched with a spell-word.
BOBBY is smiling a bit smugly when SAM indicates him as he says ”spell-word”.
DEAN
Hmm. Now that's a new one.
He takes a swig of his beer.
SAM
It was what he was most afraid of. It was pretty brutal, though.
DEAN
On the upside, I'm still alive so uh, go team.
SAM
Yeah. How you feeling by the way?
DEAN
Fine.
BOBBY
You sure, Dean? 'Cause this line of work can get awful scary.
SAM looks over at DEAN.
DEAN
I'm fine. Hey, you wanna go hunting? I'll hunt. I'll kill anything.
SAM looks over at BOBBY.
SAM
Aww.
BOBBY smiles and looks at DEAN.
BOBBY
He's adorable.
SAM laughs, DEAN takes another swig of his beer, unamused. BOBBY pushes off his car and turns around towards it, walking around the trunk to the driver's side.
BOBBY
I gotta get out of here. You boys drive safe.
SAM
You too, Bobby.
BOBBY waves him off.
SAM
(cont'd)
Hey, thanks.
They boys watch as he starts the car and drives off. DEAN takes another swig of his beer, SAM shifts a little, looking at the ground.
SAM
So uh..
DEAN looks over at him and SAM looks up. We see BOBBY passing in the background.
SAM
(cont'd)
So, what did you see? Near the end, I mean.
DEAN
Oh, besides a cop beating my ass?
SAM
Seriously.
DEAN looks up at SAM and we see yellow flash in his eyes briefly. DEAN's smile disappears and his relaxed way stiffens a bit. He takes a moment longer before asking, thinking better of it and not responding with the truth.
DEAN
Howler monkeys. The whole room full of 'em.
SAM breathes out, not believing him.
DEAN
(cont'd)
Those things creep the hell out of me.
SAM
Right.
SAM takes a drink of his beer.
DEAN
No, no. Just the usual stuff, Sammy. Nothing I couldn't handle.
SAM looks over at DEAN, who just looks straight in front of him and takes another sip of his beer before his eyes stray to the ground.
