INT. MOTEL ROOM - NIGHT
We see DEAN lying on a bed in a motel room, with his leather jacket laid over him in a reflection of a full length mirror on the back of a door. SAM walks in front of the mirror and grabs his jacket, fully dressed. Looks at DEAN to make sure he doesn't wake him as he slips out the door, DEAN turns his head, but doesn't wake.
EXT. MOTEL - NIGHT
SAM walks out, and we see a sign reading 'WILLOW MOTEL' in neon lights. SAM walks toward a car that is pulling up. We see RUBY is the one driving the car, and SAM gets in on the passenger side of the car.
RUBY
Ready?
SAM
Definitely.
RUBY drives off with SAM sitting with a look of determination on his face in the passenger's seat.
INT. MOTEL ROOM - NIGHT
The lights of the car RUBY and SAM are in pass over the curtains in the windows of the motel room, where DEAN is still sleeping. We see flashes of the same nightmares he has had since coming back from hell. Red, presumably blood, covered face, with eyes. Flashes of screeching combined with the imagery. DEAN wakes up.
CASTIEL
Hello, Dean.
DEAN turns around to see that CASTIEL is sitting on the side of the bed.
CASTIEL
What were you dreaming about?
DEAN, obviously not happy shoves the jacket down off his arm.
DEAN
What, do you get your freak on by watching other people sleep? What do you want?
CASTIEL
Listen to me, you have to stop it.
DEAN raises his eyebrow.
DEAN
Stop what?
CASTIEL raises his right hand and puts two fingers to DEAN's forehead.
EXT. STREET - DAY
DEAN is asleep on a bench.
POLICE OFFICER
Move it buddy, you can't sleep here.
The POLICE OFFICER is standing behind the bench that DEAN is sleeping on, and waving his baton. DEAN looks up at him confused.
DEAN
Okay...sleep where?
POLICE OFFICER
Anywhere but here.
The POLICE OFFICER walks away and DEAN slowly gets up and looks across the street, and looks around a bit to see if anything looks familiar. DEAN reaches into his jacket, and pulls out JOHN's journal, and then pulls out his cell phone, and flips it open, it beeps in protest. DEAN looks at the screen, and sees that there is no signal. He holds it up to try to get a signal, but still gets nothing. He clicks it shut, and puts it down again.
DEAN
Perfect.
A classic car drives by as DEAN looks back across the street, with southern rock music coming from the speakers. DEAN gets up and crosses to 'JAY BIRDS DINER'. As he leaves the bench, we see what is printed on the back rest of it: 'Sugar Free TAB' and 'LPTS: City of Lawrence Public Transportation System'.
INT. DINER - DAY
'RAMBLIN' MAN' by The Allman Brothers is playing when DEAN walks in and takes a seat at the counter next to a young dark haired guy. He rubs his eyes and tries to shake off the weird feeling, and leans over to the YOUNG MAN.
DEAN
Hey, where the hell am I?
YOUNG MAN
Jay Birds Diner.
DEAN
Yeah, thanks, I mean...uh, city and state.
YOUNG MAN
Lawrence, Kansas.
DEAN
Lawrence...
DEAN looks away from him, almost not believing he is back in his home town.
YOUNG MAN
Hey, you okay buddy?
DEAN
Yeah, tough night.
DEAN rubs his eyes and looks frustrated, the YOUNG MAN signals to the guy behind the counter.
YOUNG MAN
Hey, uh, coffee here Reg.
REG (V.O.)
Okay, coming right up.
DEAN pulls his cell phone out of his pocket and flips it open.
DEAN
Can you, uh, tell me where I can get reception on this thing?
The YOUNG MAN chuckles as he looks at it.
YOUNG MAN
The USS Enterprise.
DEAN raises his eyebrows at him, and looks up as REG brings the coffee over. REG is dressed to the nines in 70's gear. He looks like he stepped out of a disco club.
DEAN
Thanks...nice threads. You know Sonny and Cher broke up right?
DEAN chuckles at his own sarcasm, and the YOUNG MAN looks over confused.
YOUNG MAN
Sonny and Cher broke up?
DEAN looks at the YOUNG MAN, and they both looks up at REG, who looks as confused as the YOUNG MAN about DEAN's comment. DEAN turns around and checks out the rest of the patrons in the diner. They are all dressed in classic 70's fashions, although more subtly than REG. DEAN looks back at the paper in the YOUNG MAN's hands, “THE LAWRENCE HERALD”, the main headline reading 'Nixon accepts Resignation of Top-' and sees the date on the top of it: MONDAY APRIL 30, 1973. DEAN is thinking, and a man walks into the diner.
MAN
Hey, Winchester.
DEAN and the YOUNG MAN both turn. The MAN walks right past DEAN and talks to the YOUNG MAN, shaking his hand.
MAN
Son of a bitch, how you doing Corporal?
YOUNG MAN
Hey Mr. D.
MR.D
I heard you were back.
YOUNG MAN
Yeah, a little while now.
MR.D
Good to have you home John, damn good.
DEAN looks stunned, and realizes that this is his father, in 1973, JOHN WINCHESTER at age 19, sitting next to him in a diner, and DEAN says quietly, and neither of the men overhear him.
DEAN
Dad...
MR. D continues to talk to JOHN.
MR. D
Well, say hello to your old man for me.
MR. D walks off as JOHN calls after him.
JOHN
You got it, Mr. D.
JOHN turns back around and looks back at his paper, as DEAN, not believing his eyes, stares blankly at this teenager that became his father. JOHN looks at DEAN staring at him.
JOHN
Do we know each other?
DEAN swallows and looks nervously back down at his coffee.
DEAN
I guess not.
JOHN looks at him for a second, and DEAN sips his coffee. JOHN gets up to leave.
JOHN
Take it easy, pal.
DEAN
Yeah.
JOHN crosses to the door, with DEAN watching him over his shoulder, but right as JOHN turns around to look back at DEAN, DEAN turns and continues to sip his coffee. JOHN squints at DEAN, as though he may go back, but continues his departure out the door. DEAN looks thoroughly confused and flustered.
END TEASER
EXT. STREET 1973 - DAY
JOHN WINCHESTER is walking down the street, and DEAN is following him, trying not to tail him too closely. As DEAN turns a corner that JOHN has just turned down, he all but runs into CASTIEL.
DEAN
What is this?
CASTIEL
What does it look like?
DEAN
Is it real?
CASTIEL
Very.
DEAN
Okay, so what? Angels got their hands on some Deloreans? How did I get here?
CASTIEL
Time is fluid Dean, it's not easy, but we can bend it on occasion.
DEAN
Well bend it back or tell me what the hell I'm doing here!
CASTIEL
I told you, you have to stop it.
DEAN
Stop what? Huh? What, is there something nasty after my Dad?
A car horn blares and DEAN turns around to see if something happened, and the camera follows his movement, but when he turns back and the camera focuses back to where CASTIEL is, CASTIEL is gone.
DEAN
Oh, come on! What are you allergic to straight answers you son of a bitch?!
EXT. RAINBOW MOTORS CAR DEALERSHIP - DAY
JOHN is talking to a CAR SALESMAN.
CAR SALESMAN
A fine young man like yourself, just starting out? How about I take off another 250?
JOHN considers it for a moment.
JOHN
Let's do it.
CAR SALESMAN
I'll get the paperwork.
JOHN walks over to the front of a beige VW van and starts to look at it, rubbing the headlights.
DEAN (V.O.)
That's not the one you want.
The camera pans around and DEAN is leaning on a 1967 Black Impala, for sale in the same lot. JOHN walks toward DEAN.
JOHN
You following me?
DEAN
No, no, I was just passing by. I never got to thank you for that cup of coffee this morning. I was a little out of it.
JOHN
More than a little.
DEAN
Let me repay the favor.
DEAN taps the hood of the black '67 Impala.
DEAN
This is the one you want.
JOHN
Oh yeah, you- you know something about cars?
DEAN nods his head and looks slightly nostalgic.
DEAN
Yeah...yeah, my Dad taught me everything I know...
JOHN looks at him a bit awkwardly, obviously not knowing what DEAN is feeling. DEAN catches the look and snaps out of it.
DEAN
And this- this is a great car.
DEAN opens the hood of the car and leans in, as JOHN joins him on the side of the car, looking under the hood.
DEAN
327 four barrel, 275 horses. A little TLC this thing is cherry.
JOHN
You know man, you're right.
DEAN nods over his shoulder at the VW van.
DEAN
Then what are you buying that thing for?
JOHN
I kinda promised someone I would.
DEAN
Over a '67 Chevy? I mean, come on, this is the car of a lifetime. Trust me, this thing's still gonna be badass when it's 40.
JOHN considers it for a moment and hold out his hand to DEAN.
JOHN
John Winchester, thanks.
DEAN shakes his hand.
DEAN
Dean Van Halen, and thank you.
DEAN puts the hood down as JOHN moves over and looks at the interior through the passenger door.
DEAN
I was in pretty rough shape this morning huh?
JOHN
No kidding.
DEAN
I've been hung over before but, hey, I was, I was getting chills in that diner. You didn't feel any of those cold spots did you?
JOHN
Nope.
DEAN
Naw...
DEAN shakes his head and tries to be casual as he questions JOHN about demonic omens, obviously not knowing what he is here to do.
DEAN
I swore I smelled something weird too you know? Like- like rotten eggs...you didn't happen to smell any sulfur by chance?
JOHN
No.
DEAN
No....there been any cattle mutilations in town recentl-
JOHN
Okay, mister! Stop it.
DEAN
Yeah, if only I knew what to stop. Listen...uh, watch out for yourself okay?
JOHN looks confused, but placates him.
JOHN
Yeah, sure.
DEAN points at the car and taps the hood again, and walks off. JOHN watches him, confused, and the CAR SALESMAN walks back up to him.
CAR SAMESMAN
So?
JOHN points at the IMPALA.
JOHN
I'll take this one.
EXT. STREET 1973 - DAY
JOHN pulls up to the curb in the IMPALA, and parks in front of a house. We see that DEAN is following him in another car, and parks across the street and behind a little, so he isn't seen. A blonde girl comes out of the house and runs across the lawn to JOHN as he gets out of the IMPALA.
JOHN
Hey.
GIRL
What's this?
JOHN
My car.
The GIRL walks around the back of the car, and JOHN follows her.
GIRL
What happened to the van?
JOHN
Mary, this is better than the van! This has got a 327, a four barrel carburetor.
DEAN hears JOHN call the girl MARY, and he knows that this is his mother, when she was a teenager, and shock crosses his face again.
DEAN
Mom?
EXT. DINER - NIGHT
MARY and JOHN are sitting in a booth as DEAN lurks outside, and watches them.
DEAN
Sammy, wherever you are, Mom is a babe...I'm going to hell...again.
INT. DINER - NIGHT
JOHN and MARY are sitting across from one another talking over ice cream shakes.
JOHN
I should just talk to him.
MARY
My Dad's being my Dad John, it's not you.
JOHN
How is it not me? He's been like this for how many years?
MARY
He's just protective over me, that's all. He doesn't want me to-
JOHN
Hook up with a mechanic from a family of mechanics?
MARY
No- hey, I love you, for exactly what you are. I'll be right back.
MARY gets up and walks off, and JOHN takes a small red box out of his pocket and opens it to reveal a small engagement ring.
EXT. DINER - NIGHT
DEAN is leaning against the building across from the Diner, still watching. The camera pans around to show MARY standing behind him.
MARY
Why are you following us?
DEAN whips around and MARY knees him in the stomach and throws him against a metal container next to the building. She goes to punch him, and he dodges it, stepping sideways.
DEAN
Are you crazy?
MARY continues her attack, and he backs up as she comes after him, but he manages to grab her arms when she grabs his chest to shove him again.
MARY
You've been trailing us since my house.
DEAN
I don't know what you're talking about-
MARY
Really?
MARY knees him in the stomach again, and goes to punch him, but DEAN grabs her arms and turns her pinning her to the metal container.
DEAN
Okay, how about we talk about this huh?
He grabs her arms right below her left wrist as she struggles against him.
MARY
Let me go!
DEAN looks and sees the charms on her bracelet, one is a protective one like SAM and DEAN have on their chests, and he lets her go, looking at her in shock as she turns around to face him, noticing his sudden change.
DEAN
Are you a hunter?
MARY looks at him up and down, slightly confused, and DEAN looks at her in complete shock.
EXT. CAMPBELL'S HOUSE - NIGHT
JOHN and MARY pull up in the IMPALA, we see 'THE CAMPBELLS' on the mailbox, making who we have only known previously on the show as MARY WINCHESTER, originally MARY CAMPBELL.
JOHN
See you later?
MARY
If you're lucky.
They kiss and MARY gets out of the car, and JOHN drives away as she watches smiling. She looks over to a bush, and DEAN comes out from behind it.
MARY
Dean right?
DEAN walks over to her.
MARY
I'm not sure you should come in.
DEAN
You can trust me, I mean, come on, we're all hunters right? I mean, we're- we're practically family.
MARY looks at him curiously, and shakes her head.
MARY
Yeah, thing is, my Dad, he's a little um...
DEAN
Oh, I gotta meet him
MARY
You've heard of him?
DEAN
Clearly not enough.
INT. CAMBELL HOUSE - NIGHT
MARY'S DAD is sitting in a chair, and doesn't even look up at DEAN.
MARY'S DAD
So, you're a hunter? Well, tell me something mister hunter, you kill vampires with wooden stakes or silver.
DEAN chuckles at the obvious 'test question' to make sure he is a hunter.
DEAN
Neither, you cut their heads off.
MARY smiles knowing what her Dad was pulling.
DEAN
So, did I pass your test?
MARY'S DAD
Yup...
MARY'S DAD closes the book he is reading and tosses it on the table next to the chair he is in, and glances up at DEAN.
MARY'S DAD
Now get out of my house, I don't
MARY
Dad!
MARY'S DAD
I don't trust other hunters Dean, don't want their help, don't want them around my family.
MARY'S MOM is setting the table in the next room, and calls to MARY'S DAD.
MARY'S MOM
Knock it off Samuel.
MARY'S DAD, who we now know is named SAMUEL, and we can guess that Mary named SAM after her father now.
SAMUEL
He's a hunter.
MARY'S MOM walks into the room talking to SAMUEL.
MARY'S MOM
Who passed your little pop quiz, and now I am inviting him to dinner.
MARY'S MOM turns to DEAN.
MARY'S MOM
Are you hungry?
DEAN
Starving.
MARY'S MOM holds out her hand to shake DEAN's.
MARY'S MOM
Good, I'm Deanna, you've met my husband Samuel, now wash up.
Now we also know where DEAN got his name from. He was named after his maternal grandmother DEANNA. DEAN catches this detail as DEANNA walks back into the other room to set the table ad DEAN looks at MARY.
DEAN
Samuel and Deanna?
MARY nods.
DEAN
Really?
INT. CAMPBELL HOME - NIGHT
DEAN, MARY, SAMUEL and DEANNA are sitting around the dining room table eating dinner. DEANNA leans over and touches DEAN's arm.
DEANNA
First time in Lawrence Dean?
DEAN
Well, it's been a while. Things sure have changed...I think.
SAMUEL
You working a job?
DEAN
Yeah, maybe.
SAMUEL
What's that mean?
DEAN
It means I don't trust other hunters either, Samuel.
The tension rises at the table, and SAMUEL and DEAN exchange a curt smile.
MARY
Hey, so why were you following me and John?
DEAN
Mmm, I thought something was after your- uh- um...your boyfriend, but um, I don't think that anymore.
DEANNA
John Winchester mixing it up with spirits, can you imagine?
DEAN raises his eyebrows, and there is a loud sigh from he other end of the table as SAMUEL shifts in his seat.
MARY
I saw that.
SAMUEL
What?
MARY
That sour lemon look.
SAMUEL
Now hold on, John's a really- really- nice...naïve civilian.
DEAN shakes his head, since he was raised by the JOHN WINCHESTER that was a demon hunter, and can't believe that he came back to the past, and it is his mother's side of the family that were hunters.
MARY
So what? You'd rather me be with a guy like this?
She nods at DEAN who gets uncomfortable, and shakes his head.
DEAN
What? No- no- no
SAMUEL
Mary, of course not, it's just I-
DEANNA
That's enough, both of you, we have company.
DEAN
So what about you Sam, you uh, working a job?
SAMUEL
Might be.
MARY sighs, and turns to DEAN.
MARY
He's working a job on the Whitshire Farm.
SAMUEL gives MARY a look as DEAN clears his throat.
DEAN
Whitshire, why does- why does that name sound familiar to me?
SAMUEL
Well, it's been all over the papers Tom Whitshire. Got tangled up in a combine a few towns over.
DEAN
That kind of thing happens.
SAMUEL
So why was he on it in the first place when his crops are all dead?
DEAN
Demonic omens?
SAMUEL
That's what I gotta find out.
DEAN
What about the rest of the town? Well, did you find anything on the web?
SAMUEL looks at him with a weird look on his face, DEAN remembers what time he is in, and that they don't have the internet yet.
DEAN
...of information that you have assembled.
DEANNA
Electrical storms maybe, the weather service graphs should be here on Friday.
DEAN
By mail?
SAMUEL looks over at DEANNA astonished by the weird questions that DEAN is asking.
SAMUEL
No, we hired a jet liner to fly 'em to us overnight.
DEAN laughs, realizing again that he is in the past.
DEAN
You know, it sounds to me like we might be hunting the same thing. You know if we go in there in numbers, we could take care of this thing real quick.
SAMUEL
What part of we work alone do you not understand son?
EXT. WHITSHIRE HOME - DAY
MARY and SAMUEL are sitting in the truck, parked outside the house.
MARY
And I'm here because?
SAMUEL
Family business Mary...family.
SAMUEL grabs a pound cake and gets out of the truck, as does MARY. He comes around the front of the truck, dressed in a priest disguise.
SAMUEL
What? You'd rather be waving pom poms at a bunch of dumb jocks?
MARY smiles at SAMUEL, and catches sight of a teenager leaning up against a tree, and moves toward him as SAMUEL makes his way to the door, he stops when he notices MARY moving toward the boy and turns around.
SAMUEL
Uh, where you goin'?
MARY
To do the job Dad.
MARY walks toward the boy leaning on the tree, and SAMUEL walks up to the door of the house. Right when he gets there and raises his hand to knock on the door, it opens, revealing DEAN in a priest's outfit as well, with the widow, BETH WHITSHIRE, behind him.
SAMUEL
Father, I see you beat me here.
DEAN
The Lord is funny that way. Beth Whitshire, this is my associate, our senior- senior priest, Father Chaney.
DEAN has stepped out the door, and joined SAMUEL on the porch.
SAMUEL
Please accept our deepest condolences on behalf of the county diocese.
BETH
Thank you.
DEAN
Mrs. Whitshire was just telling me all about Tom, and how normal and ordinary things were the day before his death.
SAMUEL
I see, so you didn't notice anything unusual Mam?
BETH
You mean like my husbands guts fertilizing the back 40?
SAMUEL is stunned into silence at her response, and DEAN looking amused turns to leave.
DEAN
Excuse me.
DEAN pats SAMUEL on the back and then makes his way off the porch. SAMUEL shares an awkward smile with BETH, and we see DEAN approaching MARY and the boy, CHARLIE. MARY sees DEAN, and gets the outfit, and turns back to CHARLIE.
MARY
Charlie, would you like to tell the father here what you just told me?
CHARLIE
Dad drank sometimes, sometimes he got rough with Mom.
MARY
And that's when the stranger came?
CHARLIE
I just thought he was some Bible thumper, like you all. He showed up about a week ago.
DEAN
Saying what?
CHARLIE
Did I want the beatings to stop? I just thought he was crazy, I didn't think- and the next thing I know, Dad's dead. Am I going to jail?
MARY
You didn't do this Charlie.
DEAN
Did the stranger want something in return?
CHARLIE
He didn't want anything.
DEAN
Come on Chuck, he wasn't just handing out freebies now, was he?
CHARLIE
He did say something about comin' a callin' ten years from now. Maybe he'd want something then.
DEAN
Something like what?
CHARLIE
I don't know okay? Look, I told you he was nuts.
MARY grabs DEAN's arm and leads him off to the side where CHARLIE can't hear them talk.
MARY
What do you think?
DEAN
I think he just pimped his soul to a demon and doesn't even know it.
MARY turns back around and returns to CHARLIE, and DEAN follows her.
MARY
Charlie, do you remember what this stranger looked like?
CHARLIE
Yeah, he was about 5'10”, white, normal looking really.
MARY
Anything else?
CHARLIE
There was one thing.
DEAN
What?
CHARLIE
It's just, the light hit his eyes in a weird way and...for a moment I coulda sworn-
DEAN
What? That they were black? Or red maybe?
CHARLIE
No, they were yellow, pale yellow.
DEAN looks surprised and looks over at MARY with slight fear, hearing the YED is here.
INT. CAMPBELL HOME - NIGHT
DEAN slams a map down on the dining room table, as DEANNA is in the kitchen chopping up bananas, and SAMUEL is pacing back and forth next to DEAN.
SAMUEL
What do you say we just slow down and talk this thing through.
DEAN
There's nothing to talk about.
SAMUEL
Except you're saying it's a demon, and none of us has ever heard of a demon with yellow eyes.
DEAN
Yeah, well, I have, this thing killed my family.
SAMUEL
Just calm down son.
DEAN
You don't get it do you? You are in danger, we are all in danger. In fact, you need to get yourself someplace safe.
SAMUEL
Not until we know what we're dealing with here.
DEANNA comes in with a fruit salad in her hand.
DEANNA
Sam's right Dean, it could be a demon, it could be a shapeshifter, it could be any number of things.
DEAN
I know what this thing is!
DEANNA stops and turns around going back into the kitchen.
DEAN
And I'm gonna kill it, that's all the talking I need to do.
SAMUEL
You're gonna kill a demon? How?
DEAN
There's a hunter named Daniel Elkins, he lives in Colorado, he has Colt's gun. The Colt.
SAMUEL
Yeah, I heard about the colt, used to tell it to Mary as a bedtime story.
DEAN
Well, it's real.
SAMUEL looks at DEANNA, and she looks back at him, they don't know what to think.
SAMUEL
Alright, say that it is. You got some kind of crystal ball telling you where this demon's gonna be?
DEAN
Yeah, maybe I do.
DEAN reaches over and pulls out JOHN's journal and flips it open on the table.
SAMUEL
What's this?
DEAN
It's a list.
SAMUEL
Of what?
DEAN
My Dad wrote down anyone he thought ever came in contact with the Yellow Eyed Demon, who, where and when.
SAMUEL
Why?
DEAN
Cause the more he could learn about the son of a bitch, the more he could figure out why it killed my Mom.
DEAN flips the page.
DEAN
Look, Whitshire farm. I told you that name sounded familiar.
SAMUEL
Whitshire farms, that was two days ago, how the hell is that on your Dad's list?
DEAN
Uh...my Dad could see the future. Looks at this, it says he's gonna hit here tomorrow night.
SAMUEL
Liddy Walsh?
DEAN
Haleyville, that's close.
SAMUEL
I mean, yeah, it's about three miles, but...
SAMUEL looks over at DEANNA leaning on the door jamb, and she shakes her head slightly at the whole story. SAMUEL looks back at DEAN, and he sees the tension, that they don't believe him.
DEAN
I know you guys think I'm crazy.
SAMUEL
You seem like a really nice kid Dean, but yeah, you're crazy.
DEAN
Yeah, maybe, but I know where this bastard's gonna be, and I'm gonna stop it, once and for all.
DEAN grabs his stuff and walks out of the room.
INT. CAMPBELL HOME - NIGHT
MARY is sitting, going through records, with music playing quietly in the background. She is smiling, looking like she is enjoying herself. DEAN comes to the door and watches her for a second before he comes into the room and clears his throat as MARY looks up.
DEAN
I uh- I'm shoving off, I just wanted to say, bye.
MARY
Really?
She gathers the records in her lap and puts them on the table in front of her, and stands up.
MARY
So soon?
DEAN
Yeah huh...job to do. Hey, I wanted to- t-tell you, you know for what it's worth. Um...it doesn't matter what your Dad thinks, I like that John kid.
MARY chuckles and looks happy.
MARY
You do?
DEAN
Yeah, yeah, I think you two are meant to be.
DEAN lowers his voice a little.
DEAN
Hell, I'm depending on it.
MARY
What?
DEAN
Nothing, um...can I ask you a question?
MARY gives a slight nod.
DEAN
What's he like? John.
MARY
Why do you ask?
DEAN
Just curious.
MARY
I don't know, um...he's sweet, kind. Even after the war, after everything, he still believes in happily ever after you know? He's everything a hunter isn't.
DEAN nods, and she realizes that she is talking to a hunter.
MARY
No offense.
DEAN
No, none taken.
MARY sighs and looks at DEAN for a second.
MARY
Can I tell you something?
DEAN nods at her, and she gets excited while she talks.
MARY
He's gonna ask me to marry him. Tomorrow I think!
DEAN
Yeah?
MARY
Oh, Dad's gonna explode, but I don't care. I'll run away if I have to, I just, I love John, and...
MARY trails off and DEAN looks at her expectantly.
DEAN
And what?
MARY
I wanna get out.
DEAN looks a bit confused.
MARY
This job, this life, I hate it.
DEAN looks taken aback.
MARY
I want a family, I wanna be safe.
DEAN is starting to get emotional, tears welling up in his eyes.
MARY
You know the worst thing I can think of? The very worst thing? Is for my children to be raised into this like I was. No, I won't let it happen.
DEAN nods and blinks back tears.
DEAN
Yeah...
MARY
Hey, are you okay?
DEAN
Yeah, no I'm- I'm fine. Hey, uh, Mary, can I tell you something?
MARY
Sure.
DEAN
Even if this sounds really weird. Will you promise me that you will remember?
MARY
Okay.
DEAN
On November second 1983, don't get out of bed.
DEAN is barely holding back tears now, very emotional. MARY looks at him confused.
DEAN
No matter what you hear, or what you see.
Now tears begin to fall down his face, as he makes a final plea with her, trying to brand her memory.
DEAN
Promise me you won't get out of bed.
MARY sees how shaken up he is, and how upset, so she nods her head slightly.
MARY
Okay.
DEAN wipes his nose and smiles at her before he turns to leave, MARY standing there bewildered.
EXT. ROAD - NIGHT
A car comes around a bend in the road, the camera comes up and we see DEAN behind the wheel, it pans around and looks in at him through the drivers' side window, and we see that CASTIEL has appeared in the passenger seat. DEAN doesn't notice at first, and looks over and gasps, and shifts in his seat.
DEAN
So what? God's my copilot is that it?
CASTIEL just looks at him, and DEAN glances over again.
DEAN
Well, you're a regular chatty Kathy. Tell me something, Sam would have wanted in on this, why not bring him back?
CASTIEL
You had to do this alone, Dean.
DEAN
And you don't care that he's tearing up the future looking for me right now?
CASTIEL
Sam's not looking for you.
DEAN
Alright, if I do this, then the family curse breaks right? Mom and Dad live happily ever after, and- and, Sam and I grow up playing little league and chasing tail?
CASTIEL
You realize, if you do alter the future, your father, you, Sam, you'll never become hunters. And all those people you saved, they'll die.
DEAN
I realize.
CASTIEL
And you don't care?
DEAN
Oh, I care. I care a lot, but these are my parents, I'm not gonna let them die again. I can't, no, not if I can stop it.
DEAN looks over to the passenger seat, but CASTIEL has disappeared again, and DEAN just keeps driving.
INT. ELKINS HOME - DAY
DEAN is kneeling at a safe, and gets it open, pulling out the Colt. He cocks it, and checks the bullets. A rifle is cocked behind him, and he hears it, and freezes. The camera shows DANIEL ELKINS with a shotgun trained on DEAN's back.
DANIEL
Hold it right there friend. Drop the gun, be on your way.
DEAN moves slowly, like he is gonna rest the gun on the top of the safe, but when he is standing up, turns quickly, and brings the gun up, pointing it at DANIEL.
DEAN
Can't do it, Daniel.
DANIEL
Who the hell are you?
DEAN
A hunter, just like yourself.
DANIEL
Thief's more like it.
DEAN
I just need it for a few days.
DANIEL
Not happening mister.
DEAN
Look, I have a chance to save my families lives, my family. But I need this gun to do it. So if you want to stop me? Kill me.
DEAN uncocks the COLT and puts it up in surrender, and walks slowly toward the door past DANIEL, who still has the rifle trained on him. DEAN turns around to look at DANIEL, and finally, DANIEL lowers the rifle.
DEAN
There's some hunters in Lawrence, the Campbell's.
DANIEL
Never heard of them.
DEAN
That's where she'll be.
DANIEL nods at DEAN and DEAN nods back and leaves as DANIEL looks after him, unsure.
INT. CAMPBELL HOME - NIGHT
MARY and SAMUEL are sitting at the dining room table, with weapons all laid across it. MARY is putting together a shotgun barrel, and SAMUEL is cleaning the butt of one.
MARY
Dean say where he was going?
SAMUEL
Said he was gonna kill a demon.
MARY chuckles.
MARY
Kill a demon? That's impossible.
SAMUEL
Yup.
MARY
Where?
SAMUEL
Uh...oh, I don' know, over in Haleyville, uh Walsh's maybe.
MARY
Wait, not Liddy Walsh?
SAMUEL
Well, yeah, I- I- I think so.
MARY
Dad, she's a friend of mine! We gotta help her.
DEANNA walks to the door of the room, and sees MARY getting up ready to go.
DEANNA
What's wrong?
MARY continues to leave, looking at SAMUEL before she leaves.
MARY
I'll be in the car.
DEANNA
Hey-
DEANNA looks at SAMUEL, expecting an explanation.
SAMUEL
I mean, she wants to hunt, she doesn't want to hunt, is this some female time of month thing?
DEANNA looks at him and sighs, walking back into the other room.
SAMUEL
What?
INT. WALSH'S HOME - NIGHT
LIDDY WALSH is sitting on the sofa, talking to DR. BROWN. He takes off the stethoscope from around his neck and sets it aside, and looks at her gravely.
DR. BROWN
I'm sorry Liddy, it's metastasized.
LIDDY
Where?
DR. BROWN
His liver, his lungs. It's time we talked about arrangements.
LIDDY
No, you have to do something, Dr. Brown.
DR. BROWN
There is one way, a cure actually, but I'll need your help.
LIDDY
What do I have to do?
DR. BROWN
Nothing, just in ten years, I'm going to come to you and ask for something then.
LIDDY
What?
DR. BROWN
Nothing you'll miss.
LIDDY looks at DR. BROWN and smiles at her, and his eyes go yellow. It is the Yellow eyed demon (YED), and LIDDY looks scared. The door bursts open and SAMUEL comes in, shooting the YED in the chest. LIDDY screams and SAMUEL comes into the room, cocking the shotgun again as the YED's eyes open. The YED waves his hand at SAMUEL and the shotgun flies across the room.
LIDDY
Oh-
The YED waves the other, and SAMUEL flies sideways and gets pinned to the wall behind him.
LIDDY
Oh, God.
YED
Hold that thought.
The YED gets up and crosses to SAMUEL as he struggles, and LIDDY stays frozen in fear on the couch.
SAMUEL
You son of a bich.
The YED leans in to SAMUEL, but turns around abruptly, and catches MARY's attack from behind with a knife, grabbing her throat.
YED
Hello there.
MARY slices him with the knife and back up.
YED
Where the hell have they been hiding you?
MARY lunges at him with the knife, and he dodges her, and gets the knife to drop from her hand by grabbing her arm, but she still fights, punching him and getting free of his grasp.
YED
I like you. You got a lot of spunk.
MARY goes to kick him, and he grabs her foot and her neck and turns her around slamming her into the wall and a glass frame that shatters as her head hits it.
SAMUEL
Mary!
DEAN bursts in, and has the Colt drawn on the YED, he turns to face DEAN and pulls MARY in front on him as a shield.
DEAN
You let her go.
The YED looks at the gun that DEAN has on him, and looks a little scared, the cockiness disappearing from his face.
YED
Where'd you get that gun?
DEAN cocks it and points it at him, and the YED chuckles softly because he has MARY in front of him. DEAN nods at MARY and she slams her arm back, and the YED loses his grip and MARY jumps sideways out of the way just as the YED starts to pour out of the mouth of DR. BROWN in a big black cloud. The black cloud goes into the vent in the ceiling, and disappears. DEAN shakes his head in disappointment, and puts the gun down to his side, and mutters to himself.
DEAN
Damn...
EXT. WALSH HOME - NIGHT
DEAN and MARY are standing on the lawn in front of the house, and DEAN is looking urgent, talking to MARY as SAMUEL comes out of the house.
DEAN
Mary, what else did he say to you?
MARY
I told you, just that he liked me.
MARY suddenly realizes that a demon just told her that it liked her, and looks up at DEAN with fear in her eyes.
MARY
What did he mean by that?
SAMUEL joins them on the lawn.
SAMUEL
Liddy's a strong kid, she'll be fine.
SAMUEL looks at MARY.
SAMUEL
Are you okay
MARY
No, Dad, I'm pretty far from okay, can we go?
MARY turns and walks to the truck, very upset. SAMUEL turns to DEAN.
SAMUEL
Nice job in there.
DEAN
I missed the shot.
SAMUEL
Take the compliment son, I'm saying that I was wrong about you.
DEAN looks at him, and then to the truck where MARY went, and looks back at SAMUEL, obviously upset.
DEAN
We need to talk alone.
They both make their way to their vehicles to leave.
INT. CAMPBELL HOME - NIGHT
DEAN is looking out the window, trying to check if they were followed. Samuel is sitting at the dining room table.
DEAN
We have to kill this thing now, or Mary dies.
SAMUEL
What? How do you know that?
DEAN pulls out JOHN's journal again and opens it.
DEAN
I just do okay?
SAMUEL
When?
DEAN
I don't know, maybe today, probably years from now, but it's happening, trust me.
SAMUEL
So what, are you some kind of a psychic now too?
DEAN
No, alright listen to me.
DEAN goes to the table and sits down.
DEAN
Now, this is gonna sound a little...actually it's gonna sound massively massively crazy.
SAMUEL
Okay.
DEAN
Mary is my mother.
SAMUEL
Excuse me?
DEAN
And I am your grandson, and I know what the hell I'm talking about.
SAMUEL looks at him in disbelief.
SAMUEL
You wanna run that by me again son?
DEAN
My real name is Dean Winchester, I was born January 24th 1979. My parents are Mary and John Winchester.
SAMUEL leans back and shakes his head, his entire stance disbelieving.
SAMUEL
I don't- I don't have to listen to this.
DEAN
Mary gets killed by a yellow eyed demon in 1983, and I think that this, what happened tonight, I think this is the moment that he caught her scent. Now, if we don't catch this thing now, and kill it, and it gets away? Then Mary dies. So I am asking you, please.
EXT. CAMPBELL HOME - NIGHT
MARY runs up to JOHN and throws herself into his arms.
JOHN
Hey, y- you okay?
MARY
You promised you'd take me away.
JOHN
Of course I did.
MARY
Do it now.
JOHN leans down and opens the door of his car, MARY climbs in, and he shuts it after her, looking concerned.
INT. CAMPBELL HOME - NIGHT
In the dining room, same as before, and DEAN is still trying to convince SAMUEL that he is MARY's son from the future.
DEAN
How did I know about the Colt? Huh? How did I know about the Yellow Eyed Demon? Or where it would be? I'm not making this up Samuel.
SAMUEL
Every bone in my body is aching to put you six feet under, but there's something about you, I can't shake it. Now, I may be crazier than you, son, but I believe you.
DEAN
Thank you.
SAMUEL
I mean, how do we find this bastard?
DEAN
Right here, the list.
DEAN opens JOHN's journal and SAMUEL watches him.
SAMUEL
And with the colt?
DEAN pulls the Colt out of his jacket and puts it on the table.
DEAN
Yeah.
SAMUEL
Here, let me see it.
DEAN moves his hand over to it, and hesitates a moment, and then moves it further away from SAMUEL.
DEAN
Sorry, I don't let anybody hold it.
SAMUEL
I'm your grandfather.
DEAN
Nothing personal.
SAMUEL
Sure it is, especially when it's me you're trying to kill.
SAMUEL's eyes go yellow, revealing that the YED is inside of him. DEAN looks shocked but before he can react, the YED raises his hand and motions at DEAN, and the chair that DEAN is sitting in slides backwards into the next room, and slams against the wall, books tumbling off the shelf with the impact. DEAN, still pinned down to the chair, and against the wall, looks at the YED with hate in his eyes, and struggles against the force holding him down. The YED looks at DEAN.
YED
Future boy huh?
The YED gets up and crosses over to DEAN.
YED
I only know one thing that's got the juice to swing something like that. You must have friends in high places. So, I kill your Mommy? That's why you came all the way here? To see little old me?
DEAN
Oh, I came here to kill you.
YED
Hey, wait a minute, if that slut Mary's your Mommy, are you...are you one of my psychic kids?
The YED leans in, and sniffs DEAN around his face and ear, and DEAN turns his head away.
YED
No, not you. Maybe you got a sis, or a bro-
DEAN turns his head back to glare at the YED again.
YED
That's terrific, means it all worked out. After all, it's why I'm here.
DEAN
So that's what this is about, these deals you're making, you don't want these people's souls.
YED
No, I just want their children. I'm here to choose the perfect parents, like your Mommy.
DEAN
Why her? Why any of them?
YED
Because they're strong.
DEANNA peeks around the corner of the kitchen doorway, and sees what is happening, she stands there for a minute trying to formulate a plan.
YED
They're pure, and they eat their Wheaties. My own little Master Race, they're ideal breeders.
DEAN furrows his brow, a little confused and a little frightened.
YED
Oh, get your mind out of the gutter no ones breeding with me. Though, Mary? Man, I'd like to make an exception, so far, she's my favorite.
DEAN gets mad at the talk about MARY and struggles against the force holding him down more fiercely, and catches sight of DEANNA in the doorway. He tries to keep the YED talking, and attention on him, so the YED doesn't notice DEANNA.
DEAN
So why make the deals?
YED
I need permission.
DEANNA comes quietly into the room, and tries to get to the Colt that fell on the floor when DEAN was slammed back from the table, without being noticed.
YED
I need to be invited, into their houses, I know, I know, the- the red tape'll drive you nuts, but in ten short years, it'll all be worth it. Cause you know what I'm gonna do to your sibling? I'm gonna stand over their crib and I'm gonna bleed into their mouth. Demon blood is better than Ovaltine, vitamins, minerals, it makes you big and strong.
DEAN
For what? So they can lead your discount demon army? Is that your big plan?
YED
Please, my end game's a hell of a lot bigger than that kid.
DEAN
End game? What end game?
YED
Like I'm gonna tell you, or those angels sitting on your shoulder. No, I'm gonna cover my tracks good.
DEAN
You can cover whatever the hell you want, but I'm still gonna kill you.
YED
Right, now that, I'd like to see.
DEAN
Maybe not today, but you look into my eyes you son of a bitch, cause I'm the one that kills you.
The YED laughs at DEAN.
YED
So, you're gonna save everybody, is that right? Is that it? Well, I'll tell you one person that you're not gonna save.
The YED takes a knife out of the holder on his belt while DEANNA makes her way closer to the Colt.
YED
Your Grandpappy.
The YED plunges the knife into the stomach of the body of SAMUEL, without even flinching.
DEAN
No!
DEANNA
No!
The YED turns to look at DEANNA as she makes a lunge for the Colt, but the YED waves his hand and she goes flying over the table into the kitchen onto the floor. The YED turns and goes for DEANNA, while DEAN struggles to free himself. The YED goes into the kitchen as DEANNA is crawling away, and kneels over her and twists her neck sideways, breaking it and killing her instantly. DEAN finally gets free, and grabs the Colt as he runs for the kitchen, but the only thing there when he enters in DEANNA's body lying on the floor. DEAN's eyes get wide, when he remembers who the YED was really after.
DEAN
Mary...Mary!
DEAN turns and runs the other way out of the kitchen.
EXT. IMPALA - NIGHT
The camera comes down, and we see the IMPALA parked by the side of a river with a bridge over it, and surrounded by trees.
JOHN (V.O.)
I guess it's no secret why I brought you way out here.
INT. IMPALA - NIGHT
The camera shows MARY starting to shake her head, and shift in her seat uncomfortably.
MARY
John-
JOHN
I just, just let me get through this okay?
MARY
Okay wait, there's things you don't know about me John.
JOHN
So...
JOHN opens the ring box and shows it to her.
JOHN
I will always love you for exactly who you are.
MARY smiles at him, and leans in to kiss him, but there are three loud bangs on the window. MARY turns around as she sees her father (we know it is the YED) opening the door of the IMPALA.
YED
What did I tell you?
MARY
Dad!
JOHN
Sir, just listen!
The YED pulls MARY out of the car and JOHN gets out of the other side, trying to explain.
MARY
Ow! Dad! You're hurting me!
JOHN runs over and tries to pull the YED off MARY.
JOHN
Hey, take it easy!
The YED grabs his head, and wrenches it sideways, breaking it and killing him instantly.
MARY
No!
He drops to the ground, and MARY tries to catch him, and falls down next to him. The YED steps over JOHN's body, kicking his feet, and turning his eyes yellow again. MARY looks up at him.
MARY
You killed him.
The YED crouches next to her and unzips his jacket.
YED
Oh, not just John, sweetie-pie, Mommy and Daddy too.
MARY looks at the blood covering her fathers stomach and her eyes widen.
YED
They're all dead.
MARY
No...
YED
Yup, afraid so, you're little orphan Mary now.
MARY
You son of a bitch!
YED
Oh, sticks and stones may break my bones, and they won't bring your family back either.
MARY
I'll kill you, I swear to God.
YED
Oh, let's not get nasty.
The YED sits down next to MARY and looks at her, a twinkle in his eye.
YED
Now look, we both said some things that we regret. Let's um...kiss and make up.
MARY is crying, holding JOHN and whimpering, all of it hitting her at once.
YED
I'll tell you what, I'll arrange to have lover boy here brought back breathing.
MARY
My parents too?
YED
Nope, sorry doll, that's not on the table. But, think about it, you could be done with hunting forever. The white picket fence, station wagon, couple of kids, no more monsters or fear, I'll make sure of it.
MARY
What? And all it costs is my soul?
YED
Oh, no, you can keep your soul, I just need permission.
MARY
For what?
YED
Mmm, ten years I need to swing by your house for a little something, that's all.
MARY
For what?!
MARY
Relax, as long as I'm not interrupted, nobody gets hurt, I promise.
MARY looks back down at JOHN, considering it.
YED
Or you can spend the rest of your life, desperate and alone.
More tears fall down MARY's face, and she continues to whimper.
YED
Mary? It's a good deal, so what do you say?
MARY looks over to the YED, and the camera angle switches to show a car coming around the bend in the road on the way to where MARY, JOHN and the YED are. We see the camera pan down to show MARY kissing the YED, sealing the deal, and it closes in on DEAN in the car, his eyes wide and he throws the car into park, jumping out of the car.
DEAN
No!
He steps around the door and rushes forward, drawing the Colt. The YED takes one look at DEAN and pours out of the body of SAMUEL in black smoke before DEAN can shoot. SAMUEL's body falls to the ground, and DEAN looks at MARY, and she stares back at DEAN, sadness filling her face. DEAN knows what this means, and his face falls, feeling he has failed. JOHN gasps, and MARY turns her attention down to JOHN.
JOHN
Mary?
MARY
John.
MARY looks relieved and leans down to him as DEAN watches, completely defeated. We hear a rustle of wings, and a hand rests on DEAN's shoulder. DEAN gasps and looks over and sees CASTIEL standing there, looking sympathetic. The camera switches back to MARY holding JOHN, and she turns around to look for DEAN again, but he is gone, the car headlights still shining on her. JOHN leans up and looks at SAMUEL's body lying on the ground, and MARY looks too, and buries her head in JOHN's shoulder, as he holds her tight and stares at SAMUEL.
INT. MOTEL - NIGHT
DEAN gasps and wakes up, he is lying on his bead, and lifts his head off the pillow. He looks over and CASTIEL is standing near the foot of his bead. He puts his legs over the side of the bed, and sits on the edge of it, looking sad and disappointed.
DEAN
I couldn't stop any of it, she still made the deal, she still died in the nursery didn't she?
CASTIEL
Don't be too hard on yourself, you couldn't have stopped it.
DEAN slowly gets off the bed and stands looking at CASTIEL.
DEAN
What?
CASTIEL
Destiny can't be changed Dean, all roads lead to the same destination.
DEAN
Then why'd you send me back?
CASTIEL
For the truth, now you know everything we do.
DEAN
What the hell are you talking about?
CASTIEL nods over to the bed next to DEAN that SAM should be in, but it is made and there is clearly no SAM in sight.
DEAN
Where's Sam?
CASTIEL
We know what Azazel did to your brother, what we don't know is why, what his endgame is. He went to great lengths to cover that up.
DEAN
Where's Sam?
CASTIEL
425 Waterman.
DEAN moves toward the door, grabbing his keys and his jacket, putting it on while CASTIEL continues to talk, looking straight ahead, not following DEAN's movement.
CASTIEL
You brother is headed down a dangerous road Dean, and we're not sure where it leads, so stop it.
CASTIEL shifts his eyes to look straight at DEAN to emphasize the last words.
CASTIEL
Or we will.
DEAN looks at CASTIEL, his eyes widening, fear and disbelief cross his face because he doesn't know what SAM is doing or why he is gone in the middle of the night, and he realizes that CASTIEL isn't kidding with a threat.
