Roosevelt Asylum
Rockford, Illinois
INT. ROOSEVELT ASYLUM - NIGHT
The inside of the asylum is abandoned and desolate. The old walls bear graffiti and several "No Trespassing" signs. Discarded bottles and papers lay everywhere. A few kids are seen cutting the chains off a door and going inside a room.
EXT. ROOSEVELT ASYLUM
Outside, a police car pulls up outside the building. Two officers, WALTER KELLY and DANNY GUNDERSON, get out of the car.
DANNY
Can't keep kids out of this
place.
WALTER
What is it, anyway?
DANNY
I forgot you're not local. You don't know the
legend.
WALTER
Legend?
DANNY
Every town's got its stories, right? Ours is Roosevelt Asylum. They say it's haunted with the ghosts of the patients. Spend the night –- the spirits will drive you insane.
(They go inside the asylum and look around with flashlights)
Hello? Police officers!
(No one responds)
Police officers!
They hear a noise coming from a nearby room. They notice the locks and chains on the door have been undone.
DANNY
You tellin' me these kids brought bolt cutters? Come on. We'll split up.
WALTER
All right.
A few minutes later, WALTER is by himself in the boiler room.
WALTER
Hello?
(He continues to look around. In another part of the asylum, DANNY is also searching. He finds nothing at first. The scene returns to WALTER in the boiler room)
Hello?
He opens a door leading to another wing of the asylum. The scene now returns to DANNY. He enters yet another room and finds a few kids crouched behind a table.
DANNY
All right. Come on out.
The kids exchange guilty looks. The scene returns to WALTER once again. After entering another wing of the building, his flashlight mysteriously goes out. He tries shaking it, but it does not turn back on. Suddenly, a door a few feet away opens on its own. WALTER looks at curiously.
EXT. ROOSEVELT ASYLUM
A little while later, DANNY is outside, watching the kids drive away.
DANNY
(speaking into his radio)
Kelly, you copy?
(He turns around and WALTER is standing in front of him)
Jeez! Where the hell you been?
WALTER
In there.
DANNY
What was it? See anything?
WALTER
(after a pause)
No.
They get back into their car.
DANNY
(into the radio)
This is patrol 1-4. We are clear and returning to station.
MAN ON RADIO
Roger, patrol 1-4. Confirming clear and returning to station.
While this is happening, WALTER'S nose suddenly begins to bleed. He wipes the blood away and looks at it strangely.
INT. KELLY RESIDENCE; BEDROOM
WALTER enters the room while his wife is in bed, reading a book.
MRS. KELLY
Hey.
(WALTER says nothing and puts his gun on the dresser)
So, what? You're still not talking to me?
(He still doesn't respond)
Walt, I said I was sorry about before. How many times do I have to say it?
All of a sudden, WALTER picks up his gun. From outside the house, two shots can be seen fired.
END OF TEASER
INT. MOTEL ROOM
DEAN is on the bed, looking through their father's journal. SAM is talking on the phone.
SAM
No, Dad was in California last we heard from him.
(..)
We just thought that he comes to you for munitions –- maybe you've seen him in the last few weeks.
(..)
Just call us if you hear anything.
(..)
Thanks.
He hangs up.
DEAN
Caleb hasn't heard from him?
SAM
Nope. Neither has Jefferson or Pastor Jim. What about the journal? Any leads in there?
DEAN
No. Same last time I looked. Nothin' I can make out.
(He chuckles)
I love the guy, but I swear, he writes like friggin' Yoda.
SAM
You know, maybe we should call the Feds. File a missing persons.
DEAN
We talked about this. Dad'd be pissed if we put the Feds on his tail.
SAM
I don't care anymore.
(DEAN'S cell phone begins ringing, and he gets up to look for it)
After all that happened back in Kansas, I mean... he should've been there, Dean. You said so yourself, you tried to call him, and nothing.
DEAN
I know. Where the hell is my cell phone?
SAM
You know, he could be dead for all we know.
DEAN
Don't say that. He's not dead. He's... he's...
SAM
He's what? He's hiding? He's busy?
DEAN finds his phone and looks at it. He has received a text message with the coordinates 42, -89. He looks at the phone in disbelief.
DEAN
I don't believe it.
SAM
What?
DEAN
It's a text message. It's coordinates.
A few minutes later, DEAN is researching on the computer.
SAM
You think Dad was texting us?
DEAN
He's given us coordinates before.
SAM
The man can barely work a toaster, Dean.
DEAN
Sam, this is good news. It means he's okay. Or
alive, at least.
SAM
Well, was there a number on the caller ID?
DEAN
No, it said "unknown".
SAM
Okay, well, where do the coordinates point?
DEAN
That's the interesting part –- Rockford, Illinois.
SAM
Okay, and that's interesting how?
DEAN
I checked the local Rockford paper. Take a look at this.
(He turns the computer to SAM and brings up a picture of WALTER KELLY)
This cop, Walter Kelly, comes home from his shift, shoots his wife, puts the gun in his mouth, blows his brains out. And earlier that night, Kelly and his partner responded to a call at the Roosevelt Asylum.
SAM
Okay, I'm not following. What does this have to do with us?
DEAN
Dad earmarked the same asylum in the journal.
(He opens the journal and starts looking through it, eventually finding a newspaper clipping about the asylum)
Here. Seven unconfirmed sightings, two deaths –- 'til last week, at least. I think this is where he wants us to go.
SAM
(standing up and pacing)
This is a job. Dad wants us to work a job.
DEAN
I mean, maybe we'll meet up with him, maybe he's there.
SAM
Maybe he's not. I mean, he could be sending us there by ourselves to hunt this thing.
DEAN
Who cares? If he wants us there, that's good enough for me.
SAM
This doesn't strike you as weird? The texting? The coordinates?
DEAN
Sam, Dad's tellin' us to go somewhere –- we're going.
SAM sighs as DEAN leaves the room.
INT. PUB
DEAN approaches DANNY, who is sitting at a table.
DEAN
You're Daniel Gunderson, right? You're a cop?
DANNY
Yeah.
DEAN
(sitting down across from him)
Heh. I'm, uh, Nigel Tufnel, with The Chicago Tribune. You mind if I ask you a couple questions about your partner?
DANNY
Yeah, I do. I'm just tryin' to have a beer here.
DEAN
It's okay, it won't take that long. I just wanna hear the story in your words.
DANNY
A week ago, my partner was sitting in that chair. Now he's dead. You gonna ambush me here?
DEAN
Sorry. But I need to know what happened.
SAM
(approaching them)
Hey, buddy, how 'bout leavin' the poor guy alone, huh?
(He grabs DEAN and pushes him into a table)
The man's an officer. Why don't you show a little respect?
DEAN stares at him for a moment before walking out of the pub.
DANNY
You didn't have to do that.
SAM
Yeah, of course I did. That guy's a serious jerk. Let me buy you a beer, huh?
(He turns to the bartender)
Two?
The bartender nods, and SAM sits down across from DANNY.
DANNY
Thanks.
(SAM smiles)
EXT. PUB
A while later, SAM exits the pub and joins DEAN by the car.
DEAN
You shoved me kind of hard in there, buddy boy.
SAM
I had to sell it, didn't I? It's method acting.
DEAN
Huh?
SAM
Never mind.
DEAN
What'd you find out from Gunderson?
SAM
So, Walter Kelly was a good cop. Head of his class, even-keeled. He had a bright future ahead of him.
DEAN
What about at home?
SAM
He and his wife had a few fights, like everybody, but it was mostly smooth sailing. They were even talking about having kids.
DEAN
All right, so, either Kelly had some deep-seated crazy way to bust out, or somethin' else did it to him.
SAM
Right.
DEAN
What'd Gunderson tell you about the asylum?
SAM
A lot.
EXT. ROOSEVELT ASYLUM
SAM and DEAN hop the fence and go inside.
INT. ROOSEVELT ASYLUM
Inside the building, DEAN and SAM begin looking around.
SAM
So apparently, the cops chased the kids here –- into the south wing.
DEAN
The south wing, huh? Wait a second.
(He takes out John's journal and looks through it until he finds something. He begins reading)
"In 1972, three kids broke into the south wing. Only one survived." The way he tells it, one of his friends went nuts and started lightin' up the place.
SAM
So, whatever's goin' on, south wing seems like the heart of it.
DEAN
Yeah, but if kids are spelunking the asylum, why aren't there a ton more deaths?
They notice the chains on the door.
SAM
Looks like the doors are usually chained. Could have been chained up for years.
DEAN
Yeah, to keep people out –- or to keep somethin' in.
SAM goes to the door and it swings open easily. They exchange a look. A few minutes later, the two of them are walking the halls of the south wing. DEAN is using the EMF detector.
DEAN
Let me know if you see any dead people, Haley Joel.
SAM
Dude, enough.
(DEAN chuckles)
DEAN
No, I'm serious, you've gotta be careful, all right? Ghosts are attracted to that whole ESP thing you've got goin' on.
SAM
I told you, it's not ESP. I just have strange vibes sometimes, weird dreams.
DEAN
Yeah, whatever. Don't ask, don't tell.
SAM
You gettin' a reading on that thing or not?
DEAN
Nope. Of course, it doesn't mean nobody's home.
SAM
Spirits can appear during certain hours of the day.
DEAN
And the freaks come out at night.
SAM
Yeah.
DEAN
Hey, Sam, who do you think is a hotter psychic –- Patricia Arquette, Jennifer Love Hewitt, or you?
SAM hits him on the arm, and DEAN cracks up. The boys enter another room in the south wing. On several tables stand jars preserving body parts. Several other tools used in the asylum are scattered around the room.
DEAN
Man. Electroshock, lobotomies –- they did some twisted stuff to these people. Kind of like my man, Jack in Cuckoo's Nest.
(He grins wickedly, but SAM rolls his eyes. DEAN'S smile fades)
So, what do you think? Ghosts are possessing people?
SAM
Maybe. Or maybe it's more like, uh, like Amityville or the Smurl haunting.
DEAN
Yeah, spirits drivin' 'em insane. Kind of like my man Jack in The Shining.
SAM still doesn't lighten up.
SAM
Dean... when are we gonna talk about it?
DEAN
Talk about what?
SAM
About the fact that Dad's not here.
DEAN
Oh, uh, let's see, never.
SAM
I'm being serious, man.
DEAN
So am I, Sam. Look, he sent us here, he obviously wants us here. We'll just have to pick up the search later.
SAM
It doesn't matter what he wants.
DEAN
See, that attitude right there? That is why I always get the extra cookie.
SAM
Dad could be in trouble. We should be looking for him. We deserve some answers, Dean, I mean, this is our family we're talkin' about.
DEAN
I understand that, Sam. But he's given us an order.
SAM
So, what? We've got to always follow Dad's orders?
DEAN
Of course we do.
(SAM gives him an annoyed look, but they continue looking around. DEAN finds a plaque that reads, "Chief of Staff. Sanford Ellicott, M.D.")
Sanford Ellicott. You know what we've got to do? We've gotta find out more about the south wing, and see if somethin' happened here.
He hands the plaque to SAM and leaves the room.
INT. CREEKVIEW MEDICAL CENTER - DAY
SAM is in the waiting room of an office. A psychiatrist, DR. JAMES ELLICOTT, comes out to get him.
DR. J. ELLICOTT
Sam Winchester?
SAM
That's me.
DR. J. ELLICOTT
Come on in.
He and SAM go into his office and sit down.
SAM
Thanks again for seeing me last minute.
(On ELLICOTT'S desk, he notices a picture of ELLICOTT as a child with another older man. A plaque on the wall reads, "Presented to Dr. James Ellicott for 15 Years of Service to the Rockford Chamber of Commerce.")
Dr. Ellicott... Ellicott, that name –- wasn't there a Dr. Sanford Ellicott? Yeah, he was a chief psychiatrist somewhere.
DR. J. ELLICOTT
My father was Chief of Staff at the old Roosevelt Asylum. How did you know?
SAM
Uh, well, I'm sort of a local history buff. Hey, wasn't there, uh, an incident or somethin' in the hospital, I guess, in the south wing, right?
DR. J. ELLICOTT
We're on your dollar, Sam. We're here to talk about you.
SAM
Oh, okay, yeah, yeah, sure.
DR. J. ELLICOTT
So.
SAM
So.
DR. J. ELLICOTT
How's things?
SAM
Uh... things are good, Doctor.
DR. J. ELLICOTT
Good. Whatcha been doing?
SAM
Uh... same old. I've just been on a road trip with my
brother.
DR. J. ELLICOTT
Was that fun?
SAM
(after an awkward pause)
Loads. Uh... you know, we met a lot of... interesting people. Did a lot of, uh... a lot of interesting things. Uh... you know, what was it exactly that happened in the south wing? I forget—
DR. J. ELLICOTT
Look, if you're a local history buff, then you know all about the Roosevelt riot.
SAM
The riot? No, I know, I was just curious—
DR. J. ELLICOTT
Sam. Let's cut the bull, shall we? You're avoiding the subject.
SAM
What subject?
DR. J. ELLICOTT
You. Now, I'll make you a deal. I'll tell you all about the Roosevelt riot if you tell me something honest about yourself. Like, uh... this brother you're road-tripping with –- how do you feel about him?
SAM raises his eyebrows.
EXT. CREEKVIEW MEDICAL CENTER
A while later, DEAN is waiting outside the building, and SAM eventually comes out.
DEAN
Dude, you were in there forever. What the hell were you talkin' about?
SAM
Just the hospital, you know.
DEAN
And?
SAM
And the south wing? That's where they housed the real hard cases –- the psychotics, the criminally insane.
DEAN
Sounds cozy.
SAM
Yeah, and one night in '64, they rioted –- attacked staff, attacked each other.
DEAN
So, what, the patients took over the asylum?
SAM
Apparently.
DEAN
Any deaths?
SAM
Some patients, some staff. I guess it was pretty gory. Some of the bodies were never even recovered, including our Chief of Staff, Ellicott.
DEAN
Wait, what do you mean, "never recovered"?
SAM
Cops scoured every inch of the place, but I guess the patients must have... stuffed the bodies somewhere hidden.
DEAN
Oh, that's grim.
SAM
Yeah. So, they transferred all the surviving patients and shut down the hospital for good.
DEAN
All right, so, to sum it up, we've got a bunch of violent deaths and a bunch of unrecovered bodies.
SAM
Which could mean a bunch of angry spirits.
DEAN
Oh, good times. Let's check out the hospital tonight.
They get in the car.
INT. ROOSEVELT ASYLUM - NIGHT
Two teenagers, GAVIN, and his girlfriend, KAT, enter the building with flashlights and look around.
GAVIN
Check this out. Creepy... yet terrifying.
KAT
I thought we were going to a movie.
GAVIN
Well, this is better. It's like we're in a movie.
(KAT sighs)
KAT
I can't believe you call this a date.
He walks away to continue searching.
GAVIN
Come on, it'll be fun. Let's look around.
(She doesn't move)
Come on.
(Reluctantly, she follows him. They go into another room. To try and scare KAT, GAVIN whips around)
What's that?!
(KAT screams and shoves him when she realizes he's laughing. On the other side of the room, GAVIN spots a door leading to yet another room)
Hey, look. Let's check it out.
KAT
Uh, I don't want to. Let's just go.
GAVIN
Come on.
(KAT sighs and doesn't move)
Okay. Okay, you can wait here.
KAT
Gavin, no.
GAVIN
I'm just gonna be a minute. Nothing's gonna get you. I promise.
She nervously watches him leave.
In the next room, GAVIN begins looking around. The door closes behind him on its own. He thinks nothing of it and keeps searching. A few moments later, his flashlight suddenly goes out. He tries shaking it, but it doesn't work. When he turns around, he sees the outline of a girl standing on the other side of the room. We are ledd to believe it's KAT.
GAVIN
Hey, sweetie. Couldn't take it, huh?
Without saying a word, the girl comes closer to him, but he is still unable to see her face in the darkness. The girl pulls him into a kiss. Without hesitation, he begins kissing her back.
KAT O.S
Gavin? Where are you?
Realizing that the girl he is kissing is not KAT, GAVIN pushes the girl away, horrified. The girl moves into the light, and her face appears bloody and distorted.
INT. ROOSEVELT ASYLUM
DEAN and SAM enter the building and take out flashlights, an EMF, and a video camera. They begin searching. Very soon, the EMF meter begins beeping wildly.
SAM
Getting readings?
DEAN
Yeah, big time.
SAM
This place is orbing like crazy.
DEAN looks at the video camera. On the screen, there are several white orbs floating around the room.
DEAN
There's probably multiple spirits out and about.
SAM
If these unrecovered bodies are causing the haunting...
DEAN
We've gotta find 'em and burn 'em. Just be careful, though. The only thing that makes me more nervous than a pissed-off spirit is the pissed-off spirit of a psycho killer.
As they continue walking, a spirit walks behind them. They are able to hear it and turn around. They don't see anything, so they continue with their search. After they leave the room, the camera pans over to another part of it. Sitting in a chair, wearing a straitjacket, is the spirit of a patient. Its eyes are bloodshot and its head is jerking and twitching violently.
In another area of the asylum, DEAN and SAM are still looking around. SAM wanders around the room for a bit but sees nothing. Suddenly, when he turns, he sees another spirit standing before him. Her face is also distorted, and she slowly begins to walk towards him.
SAM
Dean. Dean! Salt gun!
DEAN rushes over to them.
DEAN
Sam, get down!
SAM ducks as DEAN shoots the spirit. It vanishes.
SAM
(panting)
That was weird.
DEAN
Yeah. You're tellin' me.
He walks away.
SAM
(following him)
No, Dean, I mean it was weird that she didn't attack me.
DEAN
Looked pretty aggro from where I was standing.
SAM
She didn't hurt me. She didn't even try. So if she didn't wanna hurt me, then what did she want?
As they are walking down the hall, they hear a noise. They stop and, while they are looking inside the room, they see someone crouching behind a table. They move the table and see KAT jump. She is crying and panting. DEAN and SAM lower their guns.
DEAN
It's all right. We're not gonna hurt you. It's okay.
(She stands up)
What's your name?
KAT
Katherine –- Kat.
DEAN
Okay. I'm Dean, this is Sam.
SAM
What are you doing here?
KAT
Um... my boyfriend, Gavin—
DEAN
Is he here?
KAT
Somewhere.
(DEAN and SAM exchange a look)
He thought it would be fun to try and see some ghosts. I thought it was all just, you know... pretend. I've seen things. I heard Gavin scream and—
DEAN
Okay, Kat. Come on, Sam's gonna get you out of here, and then we're gonna find your boyfriend.
KAT
No, no. I'm not gonna leave without Gavin. I'm coming with you.
DEAN
It's no joke around here, okay? It's dangerous.
KAT
That's why I've gotta find him.
SAM gives DEAN a knowing look.
DEAN
All right, I guess we're gonna split up then. Let's go.
He leaves with KAT. A few minutes later, SAM is searching by himself.
SAM
Gavin?
In another hallway, DEAN and KAT are also searching.
KAT
Gavin? Gavin!
DEAN
Hey, I've got a question for you. You've seen a lot of horror movies, yeah?
KAT
I guess so.
DEAN
Do me a favor. The next time you see one, pay attention. When someone says a place is haunted, don't go in.
He turns around and keeps walking.
The scene returns to SAM. He is searching a room when he finds GAVIN on the floor, eyes closed.
SAM
(kneeling down next to him)
Gavin. Hey, Gavin.
(He shakes GAVIN, and he wakes up. He jumps when he sees SAM)
Hey, it's okay, it's okay. I'm here to help.
GAVIN
Who are you?
SAM
My name is Sam.
(He helps GAVIN stand up)
Uh, we found your girlfriend.
GAVIN
Kat?
SAM
Yeah.
GAVIN
Is she all right?
SAM
She's worried about you. Are you okay?
GAVIN
I was running. I... I think I fell.
SAM
You were running from what?
GAVIN
There was -- there was this girl. H-h-her face –- it was all messed up.
SAM
Okay, okay, listen, listen. This girl, did she try to hurt you?
GAVIN
What? No. She, uh...
SAM
She what?
GAVIN
She kissed me.
SAM
But –- but she didn't hurt you physically?
GAVIN
Dude. She kissed me. I'm scarred for life.
SAM
(scoffs)
Well, trust me, it could've been worse. Now, do you remember anything else?
GAVIN
She... actually, she tried to whisper something in my ear.
SAM
What?
GAVIN
I don't know, I ran like hell.
The scene returns to DEAN and KAT. They are still searching around one of the hallways. After a few moments, DEAN'S flashlight goes out.
DEAN
You son of a bitch.
(sighs)
It's all right. I've got a lighter.
He takes a lighter out and flicks it on.
KAT
Ow, you're hurting my arm.
DEAN
What are you talkin' about?
He shines the flame from the lighter on her arm. There is a hand grabbing her. As she screams, the spirit snatches her and brings her into a room, slamming the door. DEAN tries to open the door, but it won't budge.
DEAN
Kat!
KAT screams and bangs on the door.
KAT
Get me out! Please!
DEAN tries desperately to open the door, but he fails.
DEAN
Kat, hang on!
He begins to use a crowbar to try and open the door, but again, nothing works. While KAT is inside, another spirit begins to approach her. She screams and tries to get away from it. SAM and GAVIN come running down the hall towards DEAN.
SAM
What's going on?
DEAN
She's inside with one of them.
KAT
Help me!
GAVIN
Kat!
KAT
Get me out of here!
SAM
Kat, it's not gonna hurt you. Listen to me! You have to face it. You have to calm down.
DEAN
She's gotta what?
KAT
I have to what?!
SAM
The spirits –- they're not trying to hurt us, they're trying to communicate. You've gotta listen to it, you've gotta face it.
KAT
You face it!
SAM
No, it's the only way you're gonna get out of there.
KAT
No!
SAM
Just look at it, that's all. Come on, you can do it.
Inside the small room, the spirit approaches KAT. She eventually turns to look at it. The spirit leans down to whisper in her ear. Outside the room, the three men wait nervously.
GAVIN
Kat?
DEAN
(to SAM)
Man, I hope you're right about this.
SAM
Yeah, me too.
They hear the door unlock, and it opens.
GAVIN
Kat.
She rushes over to him, looking shocked.
KAT
One thirty-seven.
DEAN
Sorry?
KAT
It whispered in my ear, "137."
DEAN and SAM look at each other.
DEAN and SAM
Room number.
They crouch down on the floor and get some weapons out of their duffel bag.
SAM
All right, so if these spirits aren't trying to hurt anyone—
DEAN
Then what are they tryin' to do?
SAM
Maybe that's what they've been tryin' to tell us.
DEAN
I guess we'll find out.
(They stand up)
So... now, are you guys ready to leave this place?
KAT
That's an understatement.
DEAN
Okay.
(to SAM)
You get 'em outta here. I'm gonna go find room 137.
He leaves. SAM walks in the other direction with KAT and GAVIN.
KAT
So, how do you guys know about all this ghost stuff?
SAM
It's kind of our job.
KAT
Why would anyone want a job like that?
SAM
(SAM chuckles)
I had a crappy guidance counselor.
KAT
And Dean? He's your boss?
SAM
(after a pause)
No.
The scene returns to DEAN. He finally finds Room 137 and opens the door. Inside, furniture, papers, and other odds and ends are strewn everywhere.
Back in the hallway, SAM, KAT and GAVIN reach the exit, but the doors won't open.
SAM
All right. I think we have a small problem.
GAVIN
Let's break it down.
SAM
I don't think that's gonna work.
GAVIN
Then a window.
KAT
They're barred.
GAVIN
Well, how are we supposed to get out?
SAM thinks for a second.
SAM
That's the point –- we're not. There's something in here. It doesn't want us to leave.
KAT
Those patients?
SAM
No. Something else.
In Room 137, DEAN is still looking around. He comes across an old cabinet, which he opens. Inside, he finds a leather case full of papers.
DEAN
This is why I get paid the big bucks.
(He looks through the papers, one of which has "Patients' Journal" written on it)
"Patients' Journal"...
(He leafs through the journal and sees horrifying pictures of ways to torture people. DEAN looks disgusted)
All work and no play makes Dr. Ellicott a very dull boy.
The scene returns to the hallway, where SAM finds KAT and GAVIN.
SAM
All right, I've looked everywhere. There's no other way out.
GAVIN
So what the hell are we gonna do?
SAM
For starters, we're not gonna panic.
GAVIN
Why the hell not?
SAM'S cell phone rings, and he answers it. It's a bad connection with a lot of static interferance.
SAM
Hey.
DEAN V.O
Sam, it's me. I see it. It's comin' at me.
SAM
Where are you?
DEAN V.O
I'm in the basement. Hurry up!
SAM
I'm on my way.
(He hangs up)
All right. Can either of you handle a shotgun?
GAVIN
What? No!
KAT
I can.
(GAVIN looks at her strangely)
My dad took me skeet shooting a couple times.
SAM
All right, here.
(He hands her the shotgun)
It's loaded with rock salt. Now, it might not kill a spirit, but it'll repel it. So if you see something, shoot.
KAT
Okay.
SAM
Okay.
He leaves, and KAT cocks the gun.
INT. BASEMENT
In the basement of the asylum, SAM begins looking for DEAN.
SAM
Dean?
(Hearing no response from DEAN, he enters another room)
Dean?
In this room, he continues looking. After a few moments, his flashlight mysteriously goes out. He tries tapping it against his hand, but nothing seems to work. Suddenly, a door behind him opens on its own, leading to yet another strange room. SAM enters, gun raised, and searches.
SAM
Dean?
Behind a transparent curtain, he sees the shadow of someone walking by. He moves toward the curtain and pushes it aside, but he sees no one there. Confused, SAM turns around. The spirit of DR. SANFORD ELLICOTT is suddenly standing before him. DR. ELLICOTT grabs the sides of SAM'S face, sending electrical shocks through his body.
DR. ELLICOTT
Don't be afraid. I'm going to make you all better.
INT. HALLWAY
KAT is sitting on the floor while GAVIN paces.
KAT
Hey, Gavin?
He crouches down next to her.
GAVIN
Yeah?
KAT
If we make it out of here alive... we are so breaking up.
(GAVIN looks like he is about to speak, but they hear a noise, startling them)
Did you hear that?
GAVIN
Something's coming.
They stand up, and just as the person turns the corner, KAT shoots. She narrowly misses the person –- DEAN. He falls to the floor, grabbing his foot.
DEAN
Damn it, damn it. Don't shoot, it's me!
KAT
Sorry! Sorry.
He stands up and approaches them.
DEAN
What are you still doin' here? Where's Sam?
GAVIN
He went to the basement. You called him.
DEAN
I didn't call him.
KAT
His cell phone rang. He said it was you.
DEAN
Basement, huh?
(GAVIN nods)
All right. Watch yourselves.
(He picks up a gun from off the floor and puts it in his jeans pocket)
And watch out for me.
(He leaves them)
INT. BASEMENT
DEAN begins looking for SAM.
DEAN
Sammy? Sam, you down here? Sam? Sam!
(He turns and sees SAM standing in front of him. DEAN jumps, startled)
Man! Answer me when I'm callin' you. You all right?
SAM
Yeah, I'm fine.
DEAN
You know that wasn't me who called your cell, right?
SAM
Yeah, I know. I think somethin' lured me down here.
DEAN
I think I know who –- Dr. Ellicott. That's what the spirits have been tryin' to tell us. You haven't seen him, have you?
SAM
No. How do you know it was him?
DEAN
'Cause I found his log book. Apparently, he was experimenting on his patients –- some awful stuff. It makes lobotomies look like a couple aspirin.
SAM
But it was the patients who rioted.
DEAN
Yeah, they were rioting against Dr. Ellicott. Dr. Feelgood was workin' on some sort of, like, extreme rage therapy. He thought that if he could get his patients to vent their anger, then they'd be cured of it. Instead, it only made 'em worse and worse, and angrier and angrier. So I'm thinkin', what if his spirit is doin' the same thing? To the cop, to the kids in the seventies –- making them so angry they become homicidal. Come on. We gotta find his bones and torch 'em.
SAM
How? The police never found his body.
DEAN
The log book said he had some sort of hidden procedure room down here somewhere, where he'd work on his patients. So if I was a patient, I'd drag his ass down here, do a little work on him myself.
SAM
I don't know. It sounds kind of—
DEAN
Crazy?
SAM
Yeah.
DEAN
Yeah, exactly.
He leaves to find the hidden procedure room, and SAM follows.
SAM
I told you, I looked everywhere. I didn't find a hidden room.
DEAN
Well, that's why they call it hidden.
(He pauses)
You hear that?
SAM
What?
DEAN crouches down. He puts his hand by the space between the wall and the floor.
DEAN
There's a door here.
While DEAN is examining the door, SAM slowly raises his shotgun, suddenly looking extremely angry.
SAM
Dean.
(DEAN turns to look at him, confused. SAM'S nose begins to bleed)
Step back from the door.
DEAN stands up.
DEAN
Sam, put the gun down.
SAM
Is that an order?
DEAN
No, it's more of a friendly request.
SAM
(aiming the shotgun at DEAN)
'Cause I'm gettin' pretty tired of takin' your orders.
DEAN
I knew it. Ellicott did somethin' to you, didn't he?
SAM
For once in your life, just shut your mouth.
DEAN
What are you gonna do, Sam? The gun's filled with rock salt. Not gonna kill me.
Suddenly, SAM shoots DEAN in the chest, sending him crashing through the wall.
SAM
No. But it'll hurt like hell.
DEAN opens his eyes, gasping for breath. SAM makes his way over to DEAN.
DEAN
Sam! We gotta burn Ellicott's bones, and all this'll be over. You'll be back to normal.
SAM
I am normal. I'm just tellin' the truth for the first time. I mean, why are we even here? Because you're following Dad's orders like a good little soldier? 'Cause you always do what he says without question? Are you that desperate for his approval?
DEAN
This isn't you talking, Sam.
SAM
That's the difference between you and me. I have a mind of my own. I'm not pathetic like you.
DEAN
So what are you gonna do, huh? You gonna kill me?
SAM
You know what? I am sick of doing what you tell me to do. We're no closer to finding Dad today than we were six months ago.
DEAN
Well, then, here. Let me make it easier for you.
(He takes a pistol out of his jeans pocket and holds it out to SAM)
Go on. Take it. Real bullets are gonna work a hell of a lot better than rock salt. Take it!
(SAM takes the gun from him and drops the shotgun on the floor. He points the gun directly at DEAN)
You hate me that much? You think you could kill your own brother? Then go ahead. Pull the trigger.
(SAM waits, finger on the trigger)
Do it!
SAM pulls the trigger, but nothing happens. He tries again and again, but nothing happens. While SAM is distracted by this, DEAN grabs him and throws him to the ground. He stands, in pain.
DEAN
Man, I'm not gonna give you a loaded pistol.
(He knocks SAM out)
Sorry, Sammy.
DEAN spends a minute or so searching the rest of the room, but he finds nothing. Then, he spots a white cabinet in the corner of the room and we see that a little hair is sticking out of it. He walks over to it and opens it. Inside is DR. ELLICOTT'S rotted corpse. DEAN covers his mouth and gags.
DEAN
Oh, that's just gross.
(He grabs his duffel bag, takes out a container of salt, and pours it over the skeleton)
Yeah, soak it up.
He then pours lighter fluid all over the corpse. His flashlight begins to flicker, and a table suddenly moves itself, crashing into DEAN and sending him across the room. DR. ELLICOTT appears next to him, grabbing the sides of his face, electrocuting him.
DR. ELLICOTT
Don't be afraid. I'm going to help you. I'm going to make you all better.
While DEAN is getting electrocuted, he reaches for his bag and is able to grab his lighter. He clicks the lighter and throws it into the cabinet, setting ELLICOTT'S bones on fire. DR. ELLICOTT lets go of DEAN. He watches in horror as his body begins to disintegrate, until there is nothing left but a pile of clothes. A few feet away, SAM wakes up.
DEAN
You're not gonna try to kill me, are you?
SAM
No.
DEAN
Good. Because that would be awkward.
EXT. ROOSEVELT ASYLUM - MORNING
The four of them are standing outside the building.
KAT
Thanks, guys.
GAVIN
Yeah, thanks.
DEAN
No more haunted asylums, okay?
They nod and walk back to their car.
SAM
Hey, Dean. I'm sorry, man. I said some awful things back there.
DEAN
You remember all that?
SAM
Yeah. It's like I couldn't control it. But I didn't mean it –- any of it.
DEAN
You didn't, huh?
SAM
No, of course not.
(DEAN shrugs)
Do we need to talk about this?
DEAN
No. I'm not really in the sharing, caring kind of mood. I just wanna get some sleep.
He gets in the car.
INT. MOTEL ROOM - DAY
The camera pans over DEAN and SAM as they lie sleeping. Between the beds is a nightstand, on it is DEAN's phone. It begins to ring.
SAM
Dean.
(DEAN doesn't wake up. SAM answers the phone)
Hello?
(He sits straight up in his bed, shocked)
Dad?
